    Nonsurgical way to repair knee cartilage?

    I have tried glucosamine but it didn't work. Trainer said my knee cartilage wore away. Any ideas on how to repair it?

    You are 16, your cartilage did not ware away. If you have problems go see a doc. As for advice: Maybe you should look for a trainer whom does not ware away cartilage.

    Trainer took a look at my knee and the bones rubbed together. I can hear it and feel it. I have heard of other teens with cartilage problems too.

    I know i need to c a doc, the point of the post was to see if anyone had an answer to the question. Last time i checked, if there is a lack in cartilage separating the bones they can scrape against each other.

    Also, I'm not saying that is what is guaranteed to be wrong but I wanted some ideas if that is what is to be wrong with my knee.

    msm, glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin. but it gets expensive because they don't work quickly; it takes much longer for joints to heal compared to skin, muscle, etc. because of the low bloodflow

    True, these supplements sometimes take 6-8 weeks if not more of being in your system to see any benefits. If it's even something that will help your problem.

    Not saying that's what it is in ricky934's case, but it is possible to wear out cartilage at such an early age. It's not the norm, but he might have a condition that makes his cartilage less durable than the norm. The thing with the human body is that alot of what is considered the norm is based on averages and ranges. He could even have had a microtear in his meniscal cartilage when he was an infant, causing it to be prematurely worn at 16.

    Yes see a doctor. While your trainer (I'm assuming organized sports trainer and not a personal trainer at the gym) may have been trained to diagnose your injury, he cannot see into the knee. In fact many doctors often hold of on final diagnosis but rely on initial diagnosis untill they have more visual evidence such as x-rays or MRI's. Good luck.

    knees normally pop/grind/make noises. if it's not painful, it's usually not a big deal. if you're having pain, go see a doctor. there are many things inside or around the knee that can cause painful popping, snapping, etc (not just cartilage tears).

    trainers can be helpful, but sometimes they're the bane of my existence when they provide "medical advice". NOBODY can diagnose cartilage injury without imaging.

    At 16 there is no way your entire meniscus could be gone. Even if the meniscus is gone i believe the ends of the bones still have a cartilage coating the bone. I've had knee problems and when i started taking Osteo Bi Flex it has gone away. Like stated before go to a doctor, but if it's a meniscus tear that is far from a blood supply then it'll never heal, period.

    arthroscopic surgery FTW...if you have a tear in you're meniscus or other cartilage, this is the only way to fix it. There is a chance that the surgeons can repair it through this procedure as well

    If your cartilage has gone, glucosamine etc. wont do much to help. Glucoasmine assists in it allows connective tissue to draw in water, therefore being able to draw in other nutrients. Glucosamine affects cartilage. If not much cartilage is present, it aint gonna do much.

    What you're describing here is simply osteoathritis.

    First of all, the only real way to diagnose any cartilage (meniscus) or ligament tears is through an MRI......so to the original poster, go see a sports medicine doctor and get an MRI done to see what exactly the damage is.....

    And the other posters on here are right....Glucosamine and Chondroitin do not "repair" or "heal" cartilage, ligaments or tendons......it just helps build them up.....only time and rest will allow them to heal....

    And in the case of the meniscus, since it really has low blood flow, it will more than likely scar over or form fibrosis tissue rather than actually "heal"....

    I should know, bc i have a torn left meniscus and have elected NOT to get surgery.....it doesnt hurt or bother me, just pops and clicks sometimes....and it never locks up on me either....i can still run, squat and play sports.....so the sports med doc just said to leave it be.......its better to leave it in, rather than take it out and have no cartilage left......youll get arthritis by the time your 40 if you take it all out.....
