Since we have this lovely section now, I figured I would log my BJJ and boxing/kickboxing training in here.
I have been doing no-gi since November and gi since January since I finally bought a gi in January. I started boxing/kickboxing in January when classes started back up in the new year.
So far my experience includes one (1) no-gi tournament, which I competed in on January 31st, 2009.
Satuday and Sunday are optional since it depends if the guys want to go in on those days. Usually it is just me and another guy with 2+ years experience.

- Worth the trip
- Learned a lot about myself and what I need to do
- Only got slightly tooled instead of completely tooled
- I am not the greatest writer
- All the pictures turned out blurry
I made weight at 154.8 (clothes on lol) with the cut-off being 154.9. It was scary the number of people who cut weight for this thing.
My first mistake of the day was asking if beginner and intermediate would be competing at the same time. I was told that they would NOT be competing at the same time. I knew I would get my butt handed to me, but for the extra five dollars I figured I would get an extra two matches and actually maybe see just see how it goes. (That put me in beginner and intermediate lightweight) Beginner had eight competitors and intermediate had three including myself.
First up: Lightweight beginner! but no!!! Lightweight intermediate starts and guess who has the very first match of the whole tournament? CRAP! I stand with the guy for I don't know how long, but it was a bit back and forth for a bit, and the ref even told us to make something happen. The guy ends up palming me in the nose. I should have taken some time to let it recover, but I kind of shook it off and told the ref I was good to go. I end up taking it to the ground and after a sloppy attempt at a guard pass, he armbars me for the tap. I found out later after some talking that the guy was actually suppose to be in advanced, but he was the only one there at lightweight so they ended up putting him down into intermediate. (My nose is still a bit sore a week later)
Second up: My name gets called for a beginner match right after my first intermediate match finishes. I was a little down at that one, but someone pointed out that I just finished and I got to sit out until after a different match takes place. I get the take down, but he manages a guillotine with an arm trapped (oh joy!). As soon as he locked it in I knew I was pretty screwed; I told myself I refused to tap to a guillotine. I know the ref was close to stopping the match because I could feel him very close to my head. Anyways, I tripod up and put as much weight as I can on his neck/face/head/whatever as I can while I try to work on his arm around the back of my head (I couldn't get to his hands because of the extremely tight guard). It took a long time to get out of it, but I managed and I remember hearing cheering in my head that I didn't tap. His guard was so tight, I tried several ways to try and break it, but I wasn't able to. He then gets me in a triangle after I defend his armbar attempt. I was fine until I took a breath of my bicep, and then I was screwed when I took the second breath of my bicep - tap.
Third up: My second intermediate match. (I almost had to do it right after finishing the beginner bout and being exhausted from defending the guillotine so long and then defending the triangle as long as I could.) He pulls guard, ends up getting a sweep after a bit; I try to go for a kimura and a few sweeps. I manage to get a guillotine from his side control, and I get guard with the guillotine still in. I flinched - I had the guillotine and he was about to tap and the ref was even coming in to end it - I saw the hand come up. ugh, I loosened my grip just a little and instead of tapping he takes the opportunity to get out. He's in my open guard which I use to try and keep going for submissions; he keeps getting told to stop grabbing my rash guard. I end up sweeping him, and then with about 20 or so seconds left in the match he get an armbar, which I am getting out of when the match is stopped because of the clock. The ref says he gives him the decision for the armbar at the end. I should have finished it with the guillotine, but chalk it up to jumping the gun from inexperience; quite happy to go the distance against a guy with a lot more experience than me.
Fourth: I get called right after my intermediate match to do my second beginner bout; they give me a rest when they realize I just finished a full round. I get the takedown after a bit of back and forth. I go to pass his guard and he ends up kicking the top of my head with his heel; pretty sure it was an accident. Once again, I should have taken some time to recover, but I shook it off and told the ref I was good to go and we restarted from the same position. He sweeps me right away and goes into and armbar. I was attempted to get out of it when he decided to give it a good twist, I tapped since I was driving a standard and had no clue what a twist would do lol
Even though I lost all my matches, I am very glad I went. I didn't get submitted in the matter of seconds as I was thinking I might, I went a full round at intermediate, learned a lot about how I should change up some of my training, and a few other things. I will DEFINITELY be cutting weight for the next tournament since so many people there had done it.

Bring the trapped leg close to the opponents body and try to stand/put weight on it. The knee should hopefully come out, and can use the free leg to pry and make extra room to get the leg all the way out.
- Escape: Half guard to mount
- Submission: Can opener from inside guard
I honestly don't know why he showed the class this; especially when he said he doesn't want to see us use it in class and the only people that can use it in tournament already know it and the defense.
- Submission: Ankle lock from inside guard
Turn around in guard his guard and take the top ankle then twist... also another one the instructor said he didn't really want to see use do in class.
Roll:
Started with some standup and then after about five minutes it was to be kept on the ground. I honestly can't remember how the rolling went against the first guy; there must not have been anything noteworthy. The second guy: I just used the opportunity to try out some sweeps, positioning and submissions. I would scissor sweep him and then let him reverse me to do it all over again. I practiced getting some cross chokes with him inside my guard and also getting the 'lapel guillotine (I forget the name, but it is like a guillotine but you have one side of the lapel and use the free hand to push his head into the armpit of the hand with the lapel; pull the lapel and push down on the head with the free hand).
Once I got my fill of practicing those, I pulled rubber guard and was going for a gogo or omoplata when he kind of spazzed out so I loosened my lock since I didn't want him to get hurt and I ended up with an omoplata with me in the opposite direction that I would normally be in (instead of leaning forward with the arm, I had to lean back).
Not a great roll, but it was good to just practice and help out the second guy I rolled with when he asked questions.

I don't know which defense to the can opener I like more, either stiff-arming people in the face till they let go, or armbarring them. Either way, it's a fairly useless move.
The ankle lock from inside guard sounds like a pretty clever way to give someone your back.

That ankle lock is a bazillion times easier to hit from bottom of half guard.

He also showed the stiff-arming defense. I still can't figure out why he showed us the can opener, but maybe he did it and said he doesn't want to see it because he noticed someone doing it while rolling; I really don't know.
The ankle lock might have been for the same reason, it's easy to get and can cause some damage if you do it poorly. The fact that he showed two submissions while mentionning he doesn't want us to do them while rolling is...different.

Are you talking about my tournament matches or my rolling during class?

I am lucky I can even do BJJ. The next closest place I know of is two hours away! As far as I know from my search, none of the high schools near me even have a wrestling team. The only grappling sport I can do where I live is BJJ, but luckily I like it

GI
- Quickly drilled the techniques from the weekend before
- The instructor showed up 45 minutes after we started to practice (weekends the martial arts room is open for general use; it was initial just me and the blue belt I trian with)
- I can't remember all the stuff we actually went over
GI
- Me and Blue
- Drilled the techniques from the previous week
- Clock choke from side and him turtled
- Being mounted to half guard
Take left leg and put it over his left leg and my right leg; use left leg to move his left leg and get my right leg under and take half guard.
- Fireman carry
- One leg takedown
- Two leg takedown
- Side control to arm/shoulder locks
- Side control to north/south to reverse clock choke
- Others
Rolled for 10 minutes at the end. It was a good roll; noticing a lot more opening.
We chatted for a bit and he said the instructor mentionned that he wanted to aim for June for Blue to test for Purple. Blue also mentionned that he thought at my current rate, also with competitions coming up, that I would be looking at possibly having blue by Nov/Dec of this year. (not overly concerned with my belt, but it's nice to hear)
Gym later and then BJJ class tonight.
EDIT:
Monday (Feb.16, 2009)
BJJ
- "Major outside sweep"
- Choke from opponent going for double leg guard pass
- Smash pass to side control to arm bar
- Smash pass to opponent rolling to turtle to clock choke to opponent defending to opponent pulling guard and sweeping
Rolling
Standup: The class was an odd number so I stood out at first. When I got in, the guy kept stiff arming me until I broke down his stiff arm, followed by getting a whizzer on the arm and shooting for the fireman's carry. Only had time for one takedown when I had to go wrap a cut that opened from rubbing against his gi (no blood).
Ground: Odd man out again. A guy gets kneed so I step in and roll in his place. I pull guard, scissor sweep, side control, spike the arm, shoulder lock from side control (putting my weekend training to use). I then let him get mount, I get to half guard, start going for a choke when the instructor tells me to roll with Blue. Pretty much just some back and forth between me and Blue; He's offering more and more resistance as he feels I can handle it.

Started in November and as I mentionned in the last post, the blue belt I train with a lot (going for purple this summer) said he thinks I should have blue by Nov/Dec of this year. He also mentionned that it took one of the guys four years to get his blue belt from our instructor.

oh...i didnt know how long it takes to progress to blue
As far as I know, it depends on factors like the school/instructor and the student. Apparently some schools hand them out like candy and some are very picky about who they give belts to (and there is the in between).

Based on the website it was suppose to be Gi Saturday and then No Gi Sunday. Me and Blue are mentally prepared for Gi and that is what we went there for and have been practicing for; for some reason it was No Gi! When I got home I checked the site again and I was right that it was suppose to be Gi. I am lucky I just happened to have a pair of shorts in my bag or I would have been rolling with my gi pants. The division I was in was white belt under 175lbs.
After the 3rd matches armbar, my arm just wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. I did send a guy to the bathroom puking though! I have several bruises, mat burns, stiff and/or tweaked muscles, didn't get first, was prepared for Gi and not No Gi; all in all, good day!
I am fairly sure Blue was less than satisfied with his performance, which means I am sure our training is going to change a bit when we get back into the gym on Monday. I will be adding some cardio to my regular training (have always been very neglectful of cardio), working from guard, and I will be be continuing to do my weight lifting with some changes.
I am the one with the black and red rash guard.
Match 1of7
Match 2of7
Match 3of7
Match 4of7
I didn't realize it since I was in a bunch of pain, but neck cranks were NOT allowed; That was 100% neck crank.
Match 5of7
Can opener and another tight neck crank...
Match 6of7
He started the match slippery as all hell!!! He tied for first and lost in overtime during the tie-breaker. Apparently he went right to the bathroom and puked his guts out when the match was done. Add him to the list of people who have said I have a high level of endurance. Blue also asked him how long he has been training and he said over a year and a half.
Match 7of7
He tied for first and won in overtime during the tie-breaker. He trains with 6of7.

Heh, I didn't have much else to say and I wanted you to know I watched the vids.
How often do you use the can opener?
Me? Rarely. Him? Probably all the time lol
I was in too much pain to express my displeasure in the neck crank he submitted me with. Can openers were allowed to set up guard passes, but neck cranks were not allowed.

Just got back from the gym; I can't remember ever having such a pump in my arms. I actually HAD to measure my arm when I got home. It was 0.75" bigger than I have ever measured (while I very rarely measure, I did recently measure because someone asked me for a measurement, and that gave me something to compare to).
BJJ tonight; first class since the tournament since Monday's class was cancelled because of the weather. Blue is thinking of travelling this weekend to go take a class where the tournament was held. I will more than likely go with him if I don't have something else come up.
UPDATE:
BJJ class wasn't that great, but for some reason I really didn't feel like being there. We drilled some guard passes and some triangle setups/defenses. When it came to rolling, I just pretty much was half-assed about what I was doing; I was even zoning out at parts. Zoning out probably isn't the safest thing to be doing when someone can get you into a choke or grab an arm!

those were some pretty sick videos im gonna try a bjj tourney coming up in april ive only been training since jan but ive been over like 24 times
I did my first tournament with less than 24 classes and less than 3 months of training Great learning experience if you allow yourself to take something away from it win or lose. I find it also really helps if you can get video of it since you can watch it with a clear mind and not go on your adrenaline pumped memories.
I was talking to the guy in Match 6 the next day; we both agreed that we thought when he kicked me off that I went flying, but when we watched the video it almost seemed like nothing at all. Also, getting video helps you see what you are actually doing compared to what you think you are doing.

No Gi tournament
Beginner - 1year and under
Featherweight <145
Lightweight 146-160
Point system
5 minute rounds for Beginner
Had ~80 participants last year
90 confirmed guests on the Facebook group
April 18th, 2009:
Gi and No Gi
Beginner - Not defined but most likely under 1-1.5years
Featherweight <150
Lightweight 150-167.5
Probably point system
Probably 5 minute rounds for Beginner
118 confirmed guests on the Facebook group
I won't be cutting to Featherweight for either of these tournaments unless I get sick between now and then. I am currently at about 155 and plan on being 160ish by the time the April 11th tournament hits (160ish, but for sure weighing in under 160 to make Lightweight). I suppose that will leave me in the middle of the pack for the one on the 18th, but those are the sacrifices one has to make to grow!
These two tournaments will have takedowns, unlike the one I went to on Feb.28, 2009. I will most likely either attempt the takedowns (I have a couple lol) or just pull guard. I definitely feel more comfortable on my back than doing a crappy takedown and landing in guard. Have been and will keep working on my game from in guard (can anyone say horrible posture??? It's funny because I am told all the time I have great posture when it doesn't come to sports).

Back in action and getting ready for a BJJ tournament on October 3rd! There are two weight classes I could fit into: <149 and 150-174. Been dieting down to 149 for the past two weeks with one week to go. This morning I was 154.8 and I haven't had any carbs in almost two weeks except for a little bit last Friday. While there is 150-174, I am going for <149 and there I am making weight no matter what.
There is Gi Saturday and NoGI Sunday. The pancakes I have planned after weigh-in are going to be bloody fantastic...big stack with tons of syrup...chills just thinking about it!!!! I am going to tear that big stack apart.
Depending on how many competitors show up and how I do for under 149, I may do 150-174 on Sunday to change things up a bit (I know I would be outweighed, but my NoGi game is a lot better than my Gi game).
Have BJJ sessions planned for tonight after work, tomorrow, Sunday, class on Monday, and then a final class on Wednesday. Probably do some boxing tonight, tomorrow and Sunday to add some extra cardio on top of the other work I am doing.
PUMPED FOR NEXT SATURDAY!!!

Hit the mats Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Definitely getting all the rust out! Sweeping, submissions, and defense are getting much crisper. Transitions from submissions to submissions coming back, added a few new tools to my game. Also did some boxing and sparring Friday night before rolling.
4.3lbs to drop between now and Saturday morning; 5 full days to cut. Probably cut 1lb of actual weight and the rest of it be water. Going to go heavy on water tomorrow and Wednesday, then cut back Thursday and then nothing Friday.

Three more days to drop more pounds; sadly more to make sure I make weight in case the scale weighs me in heavy. Shouldn't be hard to drop the last bit of water, but it is going to suck nonetheless. Weighins have been confirmed at 8am Saturday morning with a start time of 11am. As usual, I am guessing I'll be up first like my previous three tournaments.
Did a little bit of cardio this morning for 20 minutes before hitting the shower, food and work. Have BJJ tonight where I am probably going to work up another good sweet and hopefully not get injured this close to tournament time.
Been thinking of a wishlist for food once I weigh in (not all for right before start time):
- Dairy Queen Blizzard
- Apple fritter
- Bag of big feet candy
- Cora's 1990s Harvest
- Pizza with extra cheese and a ton of meat
- Pizza Delight for a panzerotti, caesar salad and garlic fingers
- A&W Onion rings
- Chocolate milk
- Fresh moist cookies
- RUM!!!
...more to come
Should be interesting to see what my weight will be on the second day of competition!

Rolled great last night. Takedowns went great; avoided the takedowns that I didn't want to go down to, let them take me down into my guilotine, did a few takedowns to armbar and omoplata. I was definitely feeling a really crisp and prepared in terms of takedown defense and offense.
During rolling I had my training partners start in my guard or in side control. It allowed them to practice breaking my guard while I tried to maintain guard, attack, sweep, go back to guard, or get up onto my knees/feet.
Not exactly sure what my weight is this morning since my scale decided to act all funky. I woke up at 151.4, but then weighed myself after doing a few things and had 152.4... I'll just assume 152.4 as the worst case scenario and go from there. Cutting my water intake today and then nothing to eat or drink tomorrow depending on weight. I have a sauna suit just in case.

Hahah I know, just a 'wishlist'. It will be more of an after competition thing. Definitely not going to be hitting that whole list either this weekend. Have to keep things 'wholesome' until I am done.
Pedialite and some other form of carbs that won't overly shock my system. Can't say the same about Saturday night though! It really depends how I perform Saturday. If I think I performed poorly Saturday, I am not going to go crazy Saturday night... if I performed to the best of my ability... PAR-TAY

Made weight at around 148lb. There were 8 people in my division which was split up into A and B, and the top 2 of each were brought together for the medals. Not cutting weight for the next one (whenever that is) since I am now back to training regularly.
They took forever to get to my division. I was sitting around from 1030 until about 4 before they started since they were going through full divisions before starting a new one; had warmed up and cooled down enough times.
Match 1: Nothing too exciting. I pulled guard and started working from there. Got 2 points for a sweep. Took mount, but failed to realize he had a hand in so I was not awarded any points. Got his back and attack, got my hooks in a flattened him out, which made me lose one hook and avoided getting the points for it. He gets a reversal for 2 and briefly (long enough) side control for 3. I get back to guard and attempt a collar choke which he slips out of. I go for a straight ankle, get my legs in place and lean back as they call time.
I lose by points 2-5.
Match 2: He shoots and I fight off the take down until I have one leg down; end up on top with him turtle. I get to side control, but he keeps moving and I move with him, he tried to get up and I tried to lock a guillotine, but I abort and take him back to side control. I attempt a brabo choke, but get caught in his gi. He gets back to his knees and attempts?something? I still have no real clue even watching the videos. I didn?t feel threatened by it at all so I took the opportunity to sink my hand into his collar deep, pull guard, and get my other hand around his head and grabbed his gi for the choke. He just would not tap and I was forced to let go (I popped/bruised my right thumb between the wrist and knuckle). He tries to push down on my knee so I opened my guard, trapped it and used my hand to push it the rest of the way through; triangle. His face was turning and he still wouldn?t tap, I even had to point and tell the ref that he was starting to bleed from his nose! The ref did nothing so I squeezed tighter and drove his head down with both of my arms; he finally tapped.
Winner my submission.
Match 3: Apparently he is a Judo blackbelt. He goes for his takedown and I take him down to guard for 2. I fight to break his guard and to pass; end up getting to my feet and controlling his knees. He explodes into a fireman?s carry for 2 (2-2). He fights hard to get to side control, but I am able to get to guard. I tried setting up a sweep and ended up going to half guard; try to old school him to no avail. He attempts a kimura on the arm that didn?t have his ankle. I get out of it, get my underhook, and reverse him for 2 (4-2). I get reversed for 2 (4-4). The time stops with him in my guard.
I win by points 6-2. Rewatching the video shows that the ref used the wrong hand to award the points for the fireman?s carry to me, so it should have been 4-4 and an overtime or ref?s decision.
At the end of the 3 matches there happened to be a 3-way tie between myself and the guys from match 1&3. #3 had 2 submissions for 1st, and since #1 had won the decision against me he was 2nd. #1 lost the bronze medal match and #3 lost the gold medal match.
All in all, it was a good day, I am sore but fine to head to class tonight, and I know a few things I have to work on like being more explosive and taking my time to maintain a position for points; I am use to submission, tie, or ref?s decision. This was by far the best tournament in terms of organization and space. The tournament took place in a gym with bleachers, had two full mats, two smaller mats for warming up/stretching, sponsors, actual medals, prizes?will definitely go to another one if they organize it.
EDIT: How could I forget adding that #2 threatened me in the locker room shortly after my third match! I walked into the locker room to go to the bathroom and he was there changing. He started cursing at me and that I better not try that **** on him again blah blah blah Ended up hearing from another guy at the tournament that he had been in the locker room just before me and saw me go in; #2 had been punching and banging his head against the lockers. He definitely had some mental issues going on and explained why it took him so long to tap even though he was bleeding from his nose.
