The type of workout wont maximize fat loss. Sure, one type of workout may burn a few more calories, but fat loss is about creating a calorie deficit, which is most efficiently done by changing diet.

Full body workouts are better for maximizing fat loss because it takes your muscles a lot longer to recover.. Meaning that your metabolism is elevated for up to 2 days following a full body workout, as compared to 6 - 8 hours after a split workout.
I have tried both approaches and have found that I make WAY more progress (as far as fat loss goes) when I went with the full body.

Well something to keep in mind is that the more muscles involved in an exercise routine, the more your body has to work, the more you burn calories, and the more hormonal response you get.
I like full body for leaning out, and you'll be surprised how much full body workouts can strengthen the core and help cut fat.
Although, I must agree that diet will have a lot to do with how well your body handles it and how much you get out of it.
Full body 3-4 times a week is a great fatloss plan. But it's not like you can't have significant results with a split workout too.

Weight training isn't for fat loss, it's for maintaining muscle while on a diet, and in this regard, it doesn't matter what you do.
It comes down to your preference.
Don't have 3 or 4 days per week to be in the gym? Go with the full body routine. 2X/week and you're good, although each session takes a little longer.
Have more days available to hit the gym, but maybe less time each day for a workout? A split will let you get in and get out quickly.
People need to stop looking at their workouts as ways to burn calories because at the end of the week, what makes or breaks your fat loss is your diet.

I usually stick to planned workouts (i.e., Back-Monday, Chest-Wed, etc), but whenever I hit plateaus I seem to be able to get past them by just going in the gym, tossing the plan out the window, and doing a full body. The full body seems to really kick start my metabolism and helps me lean out more while making gains. Watching what you eat is the key, that, sups, and taking fish oil (for me). If my diet gets crappy my system goes kaput and my workout suffers major no matter what I do.
For the full body, I usually start with calves and work my way up the body. It gets the blood pumping and I make good gains doing that. I may not do 3 sets of 12 (per exercise) as usual, instead I may do 12 at my plateau followed by 10 reps with a small gain (i.e., 5lbs), followed by 6-8 rep attempt with a 10lb or higher gain depending on the exercise.
If I do that on a Monday, I may do it again on Thursday, then return to my regular workout schedule on Saturday. Maybe it's just a psychological routine that helps me make gains but whatever works, right? I only do them about 2 times out of a month.
Hope this helps.

I usually prefer full body workouts 3x/week. The whole point being when you're cutting you're mostly trying to preserve muscle, not build. I'm not about to go find sources, but I'm sure you've heard it, lifts like squats/deadlifts/power cleans will provide you a HUGE workout and I promise you'll feel a lot better then if you were just slamming bicep curls. This is assuming that you are cool with doing cardio 3x/week. If you're a pure lifter, then I'd split.
