where to get cheap rubber mats?
Does anyone here know a good place to get cheap rubber mats for a gym floor?
-
Frackin shoulder.
I have the 3/4 inch stall mats from tractor supply but it takes a lot of febreze to get rid of the smell. It should go away in about a week or 3. but they have alot of cost savings. Avoid foam if you squat or DL heavy your heals will sink and throw off your balance. But if its in a upstairs room in your house you may want to fork out the money for gym quality mats.

I'm working on it. The craigslist ad didn't have a number. I just emailed the person that listed it to say I want to buy it asap.

I found some at a barn store, they sell wire fencing and cattle prods, and those tanks that cows drink from, salt blocks, things to bale hay in, etc...these stores are in rural areas, check the yellow pages.

SWEET!! Let us know how it goes. Did you read my follow up post up there about the racks?
As far as mats go, not many options besides expensive. If you don't need that many, that helps, but they still aren't cheap. A lot of people complain about the Tractor Supply Mats stinking, I don't have them so I'm not sure. They seem like the most bang for your buck though.
I have some horse stall mats that were made close to me and were actually in a horse stall for awhile. I got 450 SF of them for $300 and had to spend the better part of the day powerwashing and bleaching them. They look good and they don't smell like horse crap, but if you're on them you can smell the rubber. It does not infiltrate the house though. Not sure if the rubber smell had been defeated by the abuse the horses gave them or not, but I'm happy with what I have.
We also have commercial style gym mats at work. Probably 600 sf or so, I don't even want to think about what they spent on those dudes. They're really cool though, 3/4" and diamond plate molding, and no stink. They fit together perfectly. Mucho dollars though, so beware.
I agree about staying away from the foam. Lots of people have it, I just don't prefer it and I did have that before I got my mats. If you do get that, Sam's club seems to have really good prices on it.

that looks good. So for $50 you get 6 2x2' pieces?

That cap flooring is the squishy foam mats mentioned earlier. I'd go for non-squishy, hard rubber mats. 2 4x6 mats are adequate under my parabody rack.

thanks, my space will have a power rack, some kettlebells, trx system, olympic stand , foam roller, was going to get a dip station but the rack has one. Possible in the future a dumbell rack, but probably not now. Do you think 2 4x6 mats would be good enough. Is 3/4 the best width to go with? My total space is 200 sq ft. Thanks for everyones help.

yes , the only problem that I found with them was When I measured them they measured at 5/8 inches. There is also a review of the Cap Barbell Puzzle Mat - 6 Pieces (24" x 24" x 3/4") on Amazon.com.

I don't recommend the rubber mats from tractor supply as they have a chemical, sickening smell. I've had my mats for 7 months, and the smells still there.

2 4x6 mats fits the power rack and leaves a decent amount of space in front of it for doing deads etc. You would need additional mats for anything in besides the power rack. I went with 3/4" commercial rubber mats, the thickness is nice for dropping weights, but you could probably get by with 1/2" if you wanted.
edit: The mats I got were from a gym closing, and they don't smell unless you lay on them.

If the smell lingers on rubber mats they make a sealer for rubber look into it. It works and doesnt cost too much I just dont remember where to get it in a small amount.

It may be a good Idea to pay just a little more and put in the rolled in the color you like and do the whole room rather than only 4 panels.

See what the shipping is 200 sq feet is about 300 dollars and would do the whole room and look fantastic.

I agree with the recommendation of horse stall mats from Tractor Supply.
Have them in my own gym and love them. Very heavy and durable and do not compress significantly and they're 40 bucks for a 4ft x 6ft mat.
I don't notice a strong smell from mine.
-
This feels heavy.
I have 4 horse stall mats that measure 4' x 6' x 3/4" solid rubber. I picked them up at a local tack and feed store for $49 a piece. When I say local, I mean I had to drive out of the "city" to pick them up. Mine are odorless. Anything sold for gyms is way too expensive for what you get.

I got interlocking rubber (not foam) mats from Dick's. They aren't that thick but they're good as long as you don't drop a ton of weight on them, otherwise the rubber cuts. Still protects the floor though. I've deadlifted over 400lbs on them.
Couldn't get the stall mats because they're too thick and wouldn't allow the door to shut over them.

If you don't need the entire area covered w/ rubber mats, why don't you consider what I did in the link below. I built a platform using OSB and Plywood. I used 3/4" plywood on the top layer. With a razor blade, I cut a horse stall mat length wise. The 3/4" plywood butts up to the 3/4" horse stall mat nicely.
Basically I just applied the horse stall mat in an area for deadlifts. The wood areas protect the concrete floor. It may be cheaper per sqft to take this approach and it should result in few rubber mats, thus reducing the "odor" problems discussed by other people.

Nice floor area pack, I like.
Question though. Your pic reminds me of the Sesame Street song "One of these kids is doing his own thing...."
You've got a very nice bench and db rack (not sure of brands), a precor treadmill, and some Hampton plates. But you have a Weider 350 (close?) power rack? Dude, we gotta get you set up!!!
Just kidding, I really do like your floor though.

I know, I know...I continually search CL for an upgrade on the rack. I'd love to have this rack...

I can't take credit for the platform idea though...I saw some other posts in the "Pics of your Home Gym" thread. I just stole the idea and assembled it. It was a good project between Xmas and New Year's.

When my house was built I installed the hardwood floor and overshot what I needed. I've got 9 boxes (forget how many sf that is). Still in storage in my garage. This could be a really good use for that stuff!
What to do, what to do.
