There is a pretty big difference between getting stupid people in a public school to do math, versus getting brilliant people in a private school to look at art.

lol -- wow, reality is going to be a cold pale of water right in the face.

Your best bet is to be a lenient grader, so none of them slash your tires while you work late grading papers.

Also, if you incorporate a lot of groupwork, you won't have to actuallly teach. Just sayin.

smart move getting your masters, that'll give you a nice pay bump immediately. My gf is in her last semester of grad school now and just took the 2nd part of the GACE or praxis or whatever they call it last week.

My mom taught middle school, so I know about teaching. There will be lot of discussions on stuff. I will go into politics and get people to think outside the box. I am not worried about them slashing my tires. As long as those kids learn something and make our world better, then so be it

If you are teaching remedial history at a public school, your goal should be to make sure everyone can read and write coherently, and that they all know simple things, like there was a civil war in this country, or that we are located in North America.

To teach you're gonna have to have a very high tolerance for stupidity. Figure that 70% of graduate students are stupid, along with 95% of undergraduates, and ~99% of high school students.

Personally, I have a hard time dealing with idiots in grad school. Good luck with high school.

I think it's a great idea, but from what I've noticed the first day of class determines the type/mood of the class. Don't be really lenient and let them do whatever or they'll walk all over you, and don't be a complete dick either or they'll hate you can make the class hell. Mix in some humor, pick on a few kids jokingly and try to seem fun but serious as well.

It won't be remedial history. They will know a lot about stuff from both sides of everything. My class will not be of any bias what so ever.

New teachers get the shaft! (At least in OK) A teacher that's qualified to teach any math, and can teach all levels of math well, might get stuck with... geometry, when they would be better off to be teaching AP Calc, public systems ftw. (This is coming from the son of my HS's math dept. head, I get to hear people bitch all the time :P)

Teachers would LOVE their job if they knew they were getting honors kids.

OP, good luck to you! If you have a passion for it, do a great job, I've had a few teachers in high school that have had a big impact on me, just because they cared about the students and their education.
