20 MINUTES of Cardio a day. Does it help me?

I am trying to lose weight because i have gotten so much fatter these passed few years. Does 20 minutes of cardio a day help me? I use a jogging speed and stay the same speed for 20 minutes.

Or how much time should I be running and how fast in order for maximum fat loss?

Hell yes, 20 mins CV a day is great. Your standard resting metabloic rate will be quite high if you work out that much.

Just remember to eat well too if your doing that CV per day. Keep an eye on your calorie intake, you dont want your body storing anything away unnecessarily.

Imo, you don't need to run EVERY day. 3-4 times should be enough, or you could just cut your daily calories intake by 200-300.(also eating healthier foods helps)

For results in cardio, I suggest staying in your 70% to 90% max heart frequency. (max = (approx) 220 bpm - age(in years)
20-30 minutes of that 3-4 times a week should do the trick

what does CV stand for? also is it the more i sweat the more fat loss? because i really don't know how to measure my heart rate and it would seem hard if i am running on my elliptical.

Sorry I shouldn't have assumed you know what I meant. CV stands for Cardiovascular, we in the UK call it CV you guys across the pond call it cardio ?

Your main goal is to lose fat ? If so you certainly don't need to sweat, far from it. Say your on the treadmill running.... you subtract your age from 200 then divide by 80% to get your ideal heart rate for fat burning. You dont want to be running, sweating buckets and puffing and panting like a pig, you will not be burning fat, you will be buring glycogen and muscle fibre. Fat needs oxygen to metabolise, so you want to be running at a steady pace, around your ideal fat burning bpm breathing in deep breaths through your nose and out through your mouth, the more oxygen you can get in the better, your body will then burn that fat more easily. Even a fast walk may get you to your ideal bpm, remember you 10000% don't need to sweat. I would run rather than use the elliptical, maybe others will disagree. If you want an accurate measurement of your heart rate then I would suggest investing in a heart rate monitor. Remember everything I have said is for fat burning only, I would suggest a different routine etc for building up resistance, fitness etc.

It could or could not be enough. You have to know how your body works. 20 minutes of cardio is basically warm up for me. I lift 3-4 days a week and run 6 and log about 35+ miles a week so my cardio is an hour+ sometimes 2 hours depending on the run. When HIIT is incorporated I do 35 minutes of that each session.

Of course it will help you if your body is not use to such activity.. But I think you might do better if you switch to intervals instead of just one steady pace.. and you could cut down to 3 or 4 days a week and be just fine..

So.. start out with a walk for a set amount of time or distance and then switch to a jogging pace for a set amount of time or distance and then switch back to a walk.. back and forth back and forth and whenever you feel like it you can even break into a sprint for an interval.. your intervals can be whatever you want.. 20 seconds, a minute, a tenth of a mile..

and your diet is key to losing weight also.. watch what you eat and how much you eat... small meals throughout the day help.. don't fast

I disagree you really want to be going over 30 mins to make sure your having an effect on fat loss so you can lose a good amount of stored energy and start utilising fats, my cardio is pretty much my game these days and I do up tp 4 hours at a pop but really start working to zones/levels and stick to them. 20 mins is really a warm up try HIIT

I generally do my weight training and then follow it up with Low Intensity Steady State cardio for about 20 minutes afterwards. My heart rate is pretty high, actually, and I have to do very little to keep it that high. It tapers down in about 20 minutes, so it works as a cooldown as well as additional cardio activity. This happens twice a week, and it's helped me a little with burning calories, as well as providing the cardiovascular benefit. It's not a deal-breaker either way, but I think that the effort is worth it.

You don't need to burn fat in order to lose fat, you can burn glucose and the body will burn body fat to make up for the calories lost with burning glucose. So what really matters is calories.
