New here and new to bodybuilding what types of weights do you have for your home gym?
So just wanted to say hi and ask that question.
I'm planning on buying some equipment to use at home so was looking for advice on what to get since I don't really know what I'm doing yet.

Not sure what you are looking to accomplish, but Craigslist is the place to go. I've gotten practically brand new gear for pennies on the dollar. It all depends on how committed you are and what you want to spend.
I have a full smith machine rack setup with upper and lower pulleys on either end and also full Olympic freeweights sets and all types of bars. Also a Hoist home gym for certain things and I picked up a leg press last weekend for $350, but it does what I need it to.

The most universal pieces of equipment would be:
Power rack
Adjustable Bench
Barbell
Weight Plates
Adjustable Dumbbells
As the other guy said in the past, craiglists is a great source for used iron at a steep discount. Ebay also has deals. Keep your eyes peeled, and you can find great deals.

How much do you think all that would cost? general estimate?
I really have no idea what the average cost if for these things, both new and used. I did check craigslist for some things, but the prices were all over the place and I didn't know if they were good deals or not.
Thanks.

I honestly am not sure. I haven't been in a place where I'm able to build my home gym yet.
There are quite a few people on here with home gyms who might be able to provide more assistance on the deals.
I'd say compare things on craiglists with google, to see what they sell for brand new.

The costs can vary greatly.
Here in Canada, I find plates cost a little less than $1/pound new which is pretty steep. If you want an olympic barbell and plates it will cost more and also be harder to find, but if you're satisfied with a 1" barbell and plates they are easier to find by far.
As for dumbbells, get a good adjustable set and you'll save yourself money in the long run as well as space. I personally use Ironmaster which go up to 75 lbs (with an upgrade to 120 lbs, which I also have) but you might not need something so heavy. Depending on what you need you could pay anywhere up to $400 or $500 for a set, less for lighter weight.
Just on Walmart.com here are some cheaper ones

Not sure the quality although I think Gold's Gym stuff is supposed to be decent. A power rack will cost a lot. Probably $500 or more new. Find a used one for less though.
It is very expensive, but in the long run nothing is better than a home gym.
I'd start out just getting a good adjustable bench and a good set of adjustable dumbbells. As you get more money start buying more things.
EDIT: Oh yeah a chin up bar is a good and fairly cheap piece of equipment as well.

Depends on your goals. My ultimate set-up for lifting would include:
Power Rack + adjustable Bench *
Plates
Dumbells
Squiggly Bar
Good Olympic/Power Bar
Dip station - you can do pull-ups/chin-ups on your power cage.
I was going to include a GHR station but they are a rip-off.
To get a decent powercage all this list can cost around 1.5-2k but remember you are completely set for your whole life. Then you can do 95% of everything you will ever need.
* You don't NEED the powercage depending on your goals, and with that out of the equation you can have a great set-up for around 1k. You may want bumper plates and rubber mats for any olympic/ground exercises.
As far as cardio you could fork out for a treadmill but I prefer just walking/jogging outside.

I'm not sure what exactly I want yet because of my living situation.
I'm a student right now and I'm not that far from campus at the moment so recently I've been using the school gym a lot. But I might be moving a bit farther off campus in a couple months and when I do I thought it might be a good idea to get some of the basic equipment needed for a home gym since I would have more room if I do move to this new place.
A friend of mine offerred me his treadmill for $50. I don't know if it's a good deal yet since I usually just run outdoors or on the school track.

Can you ballpark how much you are budgeting for purchases? There are some good deals out there on Craigslist but they usually get snatched up pretty quickly.

$1,000 max.
Hopefully not that much, and I have a roommate I could split some of the costs with.
