why try to analogize it?
its a sport.
if you don't participate in the sport, you don't get the label.
end of story.

Who ****in g cares!
We all traing to better ourselves. We strive every day, every week to put more weight on the f|_|cking bar. Those who do not compete can not be power lifters. Those who lift heavy ass weights each and every day to make themselves better are however traing in a power lifting style.
Powerlifting is a sport. A power lifter is one who competes in that sport.
Enough said.
I do not compete, therefore I am not a power lifter. But i sure as hell better lift as much weight as f|_|cking possible each day or i will not be satisfied. My Westside 5x5 Hybrid Log= http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=113337771

What if who gives a **** call yourself a circus clown for ****s sake. Its a word, no one controls it. Trying to align everyones interpretation of yourself with you own concept of identiy is completely impossible. It varies dramatically from person to person. I dont need a bunch of dudes from the internet to give me the go ahead on what I can call myself. Neither do you. For ****s sake people are so stupid.
It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most responsive to change.

until you step on the platform and compete you just don't understand! knowing a few months ahead you'll be training your ass off trying to peak on that day. for some worrying about making weight. you can't sleep because of the jitters and your sleeping at some cheap motel the night before. your elbow is acting up and your lowerback is aching as you awake that morning...
squatting, benching and deadlifting when someone tells you to. making one minimal mistake that causes you 3 red lights and wasting a attempt. in front of a big crowd, lights, cameras and 3 judges. in some situations waiting for hours between lifts. you can also expect the unexpected. the environment could be freezing cold or scorching hot. the bar is not the bar you use. the platform may not be secure up to your standards. the spotters look like high school kids. you and your helper did not hear that you were in the hole and up next to lift. there are only 6 people in your flight and you have minimal time to rest between attempts. you have to take a **** cause your ******* is burning out of nowhere. aww you forgot the rack command on your bench? aww you moved your feet on your 2nd? before you know it 10 hours has passed since you got there and you still haven't deadlifted yet....
aww you mad cause you got 2nd in the open division because you went raw and the other guy used gear?...it's a f*cking state meet for christ sakes, but wait you competed in 2 other divisions so you look special and get 1st anyway...but wait you hit a unexpected PR in the squat and the adrenaline you felt on the platform was mindboggling. almost everyone is friendly and those world class lifters I read about on the internet just gave me a compliment and asked to come train with them? wow a free shirt! competing is the shiznitsil. I heart competing in powerlifting.
next meet you open bigger on your squat and bomb.

I agree with the fat kid who criticizes gear while deadlifting with straps and benching with elbow sleeves. If you lift weights you are a powe lifter!!! Look I am 90 years old I KNOW what I am talking about here! I do not want to go to meets because my depends will look stupid under that tight singlet. If I do not were the depends I risk chitting myself during squats whicch would be even more embarassing! I see you guys like analogies here is mine. I just watched a porno and I mastrebated, I AM a porno star, end of discussion you young whipper snappers!!!!

Strong post man!
May I add:
it's your third squat, and just as they tell you your bar is loaded, you lose control of your last knee-wrap and it spins across the floor, unraveling. You better act fast, and then get your ****ing head into your next squat... because no one cares what happened in the warm-up room. Not the judges, not the crowd and certainly not your competitors.Last edited by DJSTARER; 02-06-2009 at 12:43 PM.

lol, or like happened to me at the Fit Expo.
you're opening your flight, they put up a 5 minute countdown to the start of the third flight b/c the fat guys requested and received 5 minutes to finish warming up.
it gets down to a minute and a half and you start wrapping your knees, get the straps up and get on the platform...the head judge is still looking around for his side judges and the bar isn't loaded...
they start loading the bar, you don't have time to unwrap and re-wrap, the side judges get into place, both of your legs are numb in their entirety b/c your teammate wrapped your knees so well. you get under the bar uncentered b/c you're in a hurry, and BURY your opener...then almost fall getting off the platform b/c your legs are turning purple and aren't responding to nerve impulses anymore...
and that's just your FIRST attempt of the day!*Mods/CS will not, nor can they change your username, so don't ask*

Like I said in Minotaur's thread, I think that you must compete to be a powerlifter.
Its a sport. I am lifting with a strength program and plan on competing but I still cant consider myself a powerlifter.
I dont think that it is arrogance that the powerlifters have based there decision. Its pride, and they have every right to be proud of what they do. They get on the platform, they have made the sacrifices of time and money to do what they do.
I also do not think that they have taken anything from anyone who hasnt competed. I am definilty weak for my weight when it comes to powerlifting, and this is only the first strength program that I have ever been on. I will continue down this path and gain more knowledge and strength on the way. I will take as much advice from the people on this board as possible whether they have competed or not, becuase if they have been training for strength longer than me, then I can learn from them.★cVc★

Whats going on is there are calling out all us who don't compete. Calling us phonie boloneys. Saying crazy things like it is different when you step on the platform. I says bulldookey! We alls have are reasons. Me, I has bowel problems and my depends get all bunched up under my singlet. The fat boy can't do it on saturdays. Probably one of those nice jew boys that respects his religion. Maybe it is those crazy ass rules that you can't use elbow sleeves or bounce the bench off your chest. Poo poo on that, we make are own rules. Yous probably has your reasons, maybe because these crazy peoples won't let you pull with them their straps. Don't matter we all competers. I don't care what this poll or any of these high all mightys think. I say poey on them and there rules. I think it is crazy that you have to do all the lifts on the same day and in there crazy order. Izaku, so what if you can do all 9 lifts on the same day, that just means yous got better cardios then me, not that you all stronger and s hit! While I am on my soapbox what this 3 lift crap! I think if I miss my 300lb bench I should be able to change my mind and say, "I made a mistake I should have only done 280, redo!" Well I said my peace I am a COMPETER. I think I voted wrong, this happened to me back in 2000!!!

your logic is terrible...
(now responding to some comments made earlier)
whats all this crap about something being a FACT if enough people believe it?
basically what you are trying to say is that powerlifting may not evolve as a sport like all other sports
they began using gear....gear has just evolved....do you discredit nfl players for not using leather helmets? all powerlifters have the same advantage, powerlifters in the 70's 80's and 90's wouldve used gear if they could
do you use supplements that weren't around in the beginning of powerlifting?
how about training and nutrition science?
whats the difference between performance enhancing and safety gear if it all assists with your lift in some way?
im trying to figure out the zigzag line you're trying to draw...Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=118679081

I agree with Perceptionists Post, and the similar stories on this page.
Powerlifting meets are not easy things to do and to do well.
One has to be able to adapt to new and possibly rapidly changing situations quickly and knowlegably. One must be able to recover quickly from slight or big mistakes, etc.
My last meet my training partners drove down to MD from NYC, and got lost trying to find the town, much less the hotel. 12 hours before I stepped on the platform, I was reeling from being carsick as a dog

In 1991 I tried my hand at Deadlifting, while I was a recreational lifter in a fitness club. I worked my way up to a 365 lb Deadlift at a bodyweight of 150. My Squat was horrible. I couldn't even squat 200 lbs due to a bad back, which somehow allowed me to Deadlift.
I trained for strength up until the summer of 2007, when I decided to try Powerlifting by entering a Full Powerlifting meet. I trained all that summer for a meet in the fall of 2007. I competed Raw, and totaled 905.
Before the 1991 Deadlifting period, I considered myself a recreational lifter.
After that period, I considered myself a strength trainee.
When I stated to train for a Powerlifting meet, I considered myself a strength trainee, training for Powerlifting.
After my first meet, I considered myself a Powerlifter.Bench (raw): 325 lbs. X 1
