women and glutamine

Ok I know what the amino acid glutamine is and I know the purpose of it in the body and how it affects the body. I also know that women do not make enough testosterone to look like a man. I guess what I am asking is do you think that supplementing with extra glutamine is beneficial. I only ask because some people will argue that it is not necessary to supplement with extra glutamine. They feel that your body makes plenty. But others argue that you need to supplement with extra because when you workout, a lot of it is depleted. My muscles are big enough (I need to lose a lot of bodyfat), so I do not want them getting bigger, but I feel that my recovery will benefit greatly from supplementing with it. What are yalls thoughts. And I do not want my muscles to look like a man either so if it will make me all jacked then I do not want to take it. Thanks

This is, as you say, an amino acid found naturally in the body....

How/ why do you think it will make you look 'all jacked like a man'....?

I used to take glutamine a few years ago, but I don't feel I got anything out of it. I switched over to xtend and I like it much better.

No, you don't get jacked on glutamine.

I've been taking glutamine too for 3 months now and feel no effect either!! I don't understand it...I thought for awhile I might have been getting quicker recovery and maybe it DOES help a bit...but nothing substantially noticeable. Maybe I'll think about checking out the scivation products.

You can find alot of threads about xtend and people raving about it. I am also an xtend fan and been drinking it for over a year at every workout. Just because people talk highly about does not make them sponsors.

Effect of glutamine on leucine metabolism in humans
R. G. Hankard, M. W. Haymond and D. Darmaun
Nemours Children's Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida 32247, USA.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the putative protein anabolic effect of glutamine 1) is mediated by increased protein synthesis or decreased protein breakdown and 2) is specific to glutamine. Seven healthy adults were administered 5-h intravenous infusions of L-[1-14C]leucine in the postabsorptive state while receiving in a randomized order an enteral infusion of saline on one day or L-glutamine (800 mumol.kg-1.h-1, equivalent to 0.11 g N/kg) on the other day. Seven additional subjects were studied using the same protocol except they received isonitrogenous infusion of glycine. The rates of leucine appearance (RaLeu), an index of protein degradation, leucine oxidation (OxLeu), and nonoxidative leucine disposal (NOLD), an index of protein synthesis, were measured using the 14C specific activity of plasma alpha-ketoisocaproate and the excretion rate of 14CO2 in breath. During glutamine infusion, plasma glutamine concentration doubled (673 +/- 66 vs. 1,184 +/- 37 microM, P < 0.05), whereas RaLeu did not change (122 +/- 9 vs. 122 +/- 7 mumol. kg-1.h-1), OxLeu decreased (19 +/- 2 vs. 11 +/- 1 mumol.kg-1.h-1, P < 0.01), and NOLD increased (103 +/- 8 vs. 111 +/- 6 mumol. kg-1.h-1, P < 0.01). During glycine infusion, plasma glycine increased 14-fold (268 +/- 62 vs. 3,806 +/- 546 microM, P < 0.01), but, in contrast to glutamine, RaLeu (124 +/- 6 vs. 110 +/- 4 mumol. kg-1.h-1, P = 0.02), OxLeu (17 +/- 1 vs. 14 +/- 1 mumol.kg-1.h-1, P = 0.03), and NOLD (106 +/- 5 vs. 96 +/- 3 mumol.kg-1.h-1, P < 0.05) all decreased. We conclude that glutamine enteral infusion may exert its protein anabolic effect by increasing protein synthesis, whereas an isonitrogenous amount of glycine merely decreases protein turnover with only a small anabolic effect resulting from a greater decrease in proteolysis than protein synthesis.
And: http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org...ull/55/12/3470
^^^
Quote:
In rodent islets, the combination of leucine and glutamine potently increases insulin secretion through allosteric stimulation of glutamate dehydrogenase (by leucine) and provision of carbons to the Krebs cycle (by both leucine and glutamine) (33,34). As shown in Fig. 5A, the two amino acids (5 mmol/l each) induced biphasic insulin secretion from human islets in the presence of 3 mmol/l glucose. Their effect was markedly potentiated by forskolin...
And this:
http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org...pplement_2/S39
Quote:
Despite the fact that L-glutamine is rapidly taken up and metabolized by islets, it alone does not stimulate insulin secretion or potentiate glucose-induced insulin secretion (14). However, it enhanced L-leucine?induced insulin secretion (5). This action has been attributed to activation of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) by L-leucine, which leads to an increased entry of L-glutamine?derived carbon into the TCA cycle and subsequent oxidation. It is known that glucose inhibits glutaminolysis in ?-cells (41), presumably via GTP-dependent allosteric inhibition of GDH, resulting in accumulation of L-glutamate and thus product-dependent inhibition of glutaminase, and as a result blocks leucine-stimulated insulin secretion (see Fig. 3 for details).

The Scivation sponsorship happened AFTER I started using the products (I was raving about them BEFORE I got picked up).

But if you don't take my word for it, you have tons of knowledgeable and awesome looking women (including Kimm) that back up Xtend

Thanks girl!

Yeah in all honesty, if I was only allowed to use 1 supp...I would have to ditch my whey protein and keep the Xtend...it's that good!!

Thanks
It depends what you want and how experienced you are at training and what your training is like. The studies on glutamine supplementation are conflicted as to whether it does anything at all. For the average person who does not do a lot, then I would recommend it for improved immune function, but for the hard training athlete then even huge doses (i.e. up to 20g/day) may not do anything! Read: http://anabolicminds.com/forum/suppl...on-immune.html.

And your muscles are NOT going to "look like a man", and certainly NOT from glutamine! Read post #55 at http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...2276481&page=2.

Can't hurt you to take an extra 5, even 10 grams a day. Check the amount in your protien powder first. Most have a good amount already in them.

Glutamine helps with glucose disposal, gut health, and definitely recovery (real world application does not always mirror science; every competitor I know uses it during contest prep). It helps me feel like I haven't been beaten in my sleep pre-contest.
