Generally deadlifts are placed on back day with squats on your leg day.
This way, with adequate time between leg and back day, you can do both at a respectable intensity/volume each week.

Not really a leg lift, although legs are certainly involved. As said, the idea is to keep these and squats apart.

I do deads as the first exercise on back days. Some people on this forum consider them a leg movement but I prefer doin them for my back. Squats beat up my legs just fine on leg days.

There was a poll on it last year and out of the 100 people who voted, 85% said back day.

on back day its good as explained above.
Another option could be to include it on your "hamstrings" day if you have a split leg workout in 2days/week (one day quads, another the rear side)
Thats my current routine.

I started with DL's on leg day, and eventually migrated to putting them on back day. Now, it's every other back day.

I've recently switched to a different split we're one day i'll do deads followed by all my leg work except squats, then 3 days later i'll do squats first followed by my back/bi work. So far i'm liking it...

Only put them on leg day if its your legs that fail in the lift which is unlikely.
For me and most people I suspect, its the lower back that fails.

Regular straight bar deadlifts should be trained with your back. But if you're talking about the trap bar deadlift, then that should be done on your leg day. It really is an awesome leg exercise.

For you guys that do deads on leg day...Do yall squat the weight up? I thought it was about pulling the weight up. When i do them i don't feel them much in the legs.

I drive from the heel, it is pulling the weight up.
Look it up though, its a complicated lift (meaning involving multiple muscle groups)

I like that plan Dave. Something like:
M. deadlifts / lower assistance work / biceps
T. presses / triceps
Th. squats / back / biceps
F. presses / triceps
And rotate through DL variations like RDLs and rack pulls and alternate front and back squats.

Performed properly they involve the legs and target the posterior chain so you can easily make a case for them being a lower body exercise. Do what feels comfortable and works for you.

Definitely back, and whole posterior chain. That includes hamstrings of course.
Deadlift variations with a lot of carryover to quads:
Sumo dead, which is more leg and less back
Trap bar dead, ditto. It is sometimes called a squat lift, because it is so like a squat.
The latter can be made more squat like by doing it off a block or plates to increase the ROM and hence the leg bend.

i agree with everyones reasoning for doing deadlifts on back day, however i still do my DLs on leg/ shoulder day for me..... I HATE squatting so i find if i dont do dead lifts on my leg days i dont work my legs enough because i just cant seem to get my self to do 100% effort on squats..... while on my back/bi day between rows and pullups i beat the hell out of my back more than any other group it seems...
thats my reason for having DLs on leg day...
Dls are an amazing excercise, and if you dont have them in your routine on any sort of level i believe you are cheating your self out of progress
