Would it be ok to start with a heavy weight?

the best is to start lightly to prevent injuries. Start light with long reps and increase over the week.
If you need exercices there are a bunch of information on the "supersite" of bb.com.

Well chances are after 3 months, you won't lift AS heavy as you were in the past, but by all means, go as heavy as you feel you can do. If you tweak a muscle, lesson learned, drop the weight some. Or you can act like you're starting over (which essentially you are) and stick to some higher rep ranges, to get some familiarity with the weights, then ease yourself back into a heavy program.
However, your definition of "heavy" might be different than mine. When I say heavy, I mean 4 reps or less = failure.

I don't think a 3 month hiatus from lifting will resulted in significant changes in strength and muscle mass - unless you been putting on weight. You may feel weak when you get back in the gym, but you should be back to the stage you were at 3 months ago in 2 weeks or less.
Not sure if others agree, but once you train for several years or more, your body remembers the moves and generally doesn't take much time to restore strength.

muscle mass starts to decrease after about 3 weeks of not lifting. So I'm sure his mass is decreased a fair amount after 3 months.
His strength will be down. however thanks to muscle memory, he will be able to get back up to where he was pretty quickly (strength wise, not size wise). But, his initial trip back to the gym will be down quite a bit.
