It serves no purpose except to set you up for a possible serious injury. One of the first rules of weight training is to always lift from a solid base. For benching, that means planting your feet on the floor.

No brain, no gain.

For me having my feet on the ground stretches out my upper body and restricts how I contract my chest. Putting my legs up (or in the air) and slightly arching my back allows me to dial into the area and get a more forceful contraction.
My feeling has always been if you're lifting so heavy that you cannot put your feet up then you have no business lifting the weight in the first place. Many may disagree with that statement but it works for me. I get a great workout and I'm making great gains in an area which used to be a weak point for me.Last edited by dodgyone; 01-30-2009 at 06:37 AM.

Years ago it was popular to cross your legs with them in the air when benching. You would see it everywhere.
It something someone saw someone else doing so it caught on from there.
Just do them the regular way and you will be happy."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda
