I was wondering if anyone could offer an alternative to the deadlift exercise. I know that it is one of the best out there, but it places quite a bit of stress on my lower back. If there are some alternatives that are adequate in targeting the same muscles I would appreciate some information on them

Alternative to Deadlifts?

Try partial deadlifts.
Use a squat rack to move the bar up to about knee level at the start of the movement. It reduces some of the stress the lower back incurs during the first foot or so of the movement. You can go a little heavier. It's great for the upperback and traps.
Another alternative is trap bar deadlifts. Your gym may have a trap bar. It's diamond shaped. You stand in the middle with your palms facing your sides. Great for glutes, quads, upper back but safer for the low back.
Good luck.

BUMP TinyJtim!!! dawg there is no exercise that comes close to deadlifts for overall back development. sure you can get a nice sized back without them i suppose. but NOWHERE near what it would look like with deadlifts. its most likely your form thats causeing the undo stress. although they were ment to be a stressfull exercise to begin with.
Train Hard. Train Heavy.

deadlifts
Talk to a Kinesiologist (PhD), and he will tell you that deadlifts are forbidden. It has been studied extensively, and results show it is the worst exercise you can do for your lower back. On the other hand, talk to a bodybuilder and he will tell you, next to the deadlift...nothing compares! You make the choice. Alternatives: Lie flat on your stomach with your hands on your lower back. Slowly raise your torso (keeping your neck in line), hold for 10 sec. then lower and repeat 10 times. The range ot motion will only be a few inches. It may sound wimpy, and even look wimpy, but you asked for a lower back exercise that is safe: this exercise is 100% safe.
Keep it healthy! Sean
