Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States armed forces were at their highest state of readiness ever and Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded. Luckily, thanks to the bravery of two men, President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, war was averted.

I never knew how know this event was. Dunblane is the next town up the road from me, I remember my mum coming to collect me at the school gates when I was going home for lunch, I had no idea what was going on.

US Delegates at the Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles of 1919 is the peace treaty created as a result of six months of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, which put an official end to World War I between the Allies and Central Powers. The treaty was a follow-up to an armistice signed months before in the forest of Compi?gne, which put an end to the fighting. The treaty required that Germany claim full responsibility for causing the war, and pay large amounts of compensation (war reparations) to the allies. Germany also lost territory to many surrounding countries, had its military forces severely limited and was stripped of its overseas and African colonies. Representatives of the new German government (Weimar Republic) were forced by the victors to sign the treaty, otherwise fighting was threatened to begin anew. Thus Germany's foreign minister, Hermann M?ller, undersigned it on June 28, 1919. The treaty was ratified by the League of Nations on January 10, 1920. In Germany the treaty caused a shock?often referred to as a trauma or anti-Versailles-complex? which eventually contributed to the collapse of the Weimar Republic in 1933, and thus Adolf Hitler's rise to power.

Panzer tanks and Blitzkrieg
Blitzkrieg is german for "Lightning War." Blitzkrieg was a style of combat never seen before World War II. Instead of entrenching thousands of infantry in a months-long standoff, blitzkrieg used fast-moving, powerful machines like tanks and Stuka dive bombers to overwhelm and terrify enemy troops, taking whole countries in mere weeks. Nazi germany used blitzkrieg to quickly conquer a good part of Europe. It was clear after Germany's early conquests that the second world war would be little like the the first one. A new era of warfare had begun.

Bugsy Siegel; "the man who invented las vegas" lies dead in the living room of his girlfriends house in hollywood june 1947, his flamingo casino on the strip went millions over-budget during construction and was complete failure upon opening christmas 1946, his mafia bosses were not happy and took him out, later they would take over ownership of the casino which would become very successful following siegel death, many other mafia owned casinos would open on the strip and the vegas strip would become the biggest adult playground on planet earth in a few short years

Just over two months after he had taken office, President Reagan was leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel, when he was shot by John Hinkley. He was rushed to the hospital, where just before he President Reagan in the hospital with card from the Hospital Staff
underwent surgery commented to the doctors, "I hope you are all Republicans." To which they replied, "Mr. President, today we are all Republicans."

wrong, jesse owens was not saluting hitler, the german on the right was, it has become somewhat symbolic of WW2
In 1936 Owens arrived in Berlin to compete for the United States in the Summer Olympics. Adolf Hitler was using the games to show the world a resurgent Nazi Germany. He and other government officials had high hopes German athletes would dominate the games with victories (the German athletes did indeed achieve a top of the table medal haul). Meanwhile, Nazi propaganda promoted concepts of "Aryan racial superiority" and depicted ethnic Africans as inferior.
Despite Hitler's feelings, Owens was cheered enthusiastically by 110,000 people in Berlin's Olympic Stadium and later ordinary Germans sought his autograph when they saw him in the streets. Owens was allowed to travel with and stay in the same hotels as whites, an irony at the time given that blacks in the United States were denied equal rights. After a New York ticker-tape parade in his honor, Owens had to ride the freight elevator to attend his own reception at the Waldorf-Astoria.

No athlete embodied toughness as a measure of courage more than Robinson. He weathered unthinkable acts of discrimination while breaking baseball's color barrier in 1947. But Robinson proved his fortitude in other venues, becoming the first athlete in UCLA history to letter in four sports (baseball, basketball, football and track) and serving as a second lieutenant in the Army from 1942 through 1944.

I always see the people sitting and sleeping on the beams and think how stupid they are, and wonder how many of them died. Like when they're sitting, none are holding on for dear life or anything, they're all very casual. Then sleeping? I roll around too much in my sleep, I'd fall off that beam so fast
