Something I have never understood

With many pre workout supplements (superpump for example) it says something like "take on an empty stomach 40 mins before workout and avoid eating a meal or protein shake before workout."

If you followed the guidelines to the letter you would have to get up in the morning (only time a bodybuilders stomach is ever empty, eating every 2-3 hours) take superpump (or other pre workout NO supplement), not eat and then workout on an empty stomach. I think this would be a very ineffective way of training.

Presumably food interferes with the effectiveness of the supplement but surely the supplement companies must know a bodybuilder eats pre workout so why make a pre workout supplement you are not supposed to take with food.

food slows down (and some cases ruin stimulants) the absorption.

I can be empty within 2 hours if im eating small meals. What i do with RPM is empty out, take them, then just eat a handful of oats dry before lifting.

What is meant by that is "take on as empty a stomach as possible".

I eat a meal an hour and a half or two hours before my workout and take my preworkout 30 minutes before my workout.

Now if I ate and took my preworkout 30 minutes preworkout... that would be a different story.

You can take it "word for word". Just get the gist (as empty a stomach as possible)

It really should say something like "Take 2-3 hours after a full meal". Which, your stomach would be pretty much empty. Taking it too close to meals will definetely alter it's effects.

simple as this...I'm usually good at about 1-2 hrs prior to my pre-workout supps...
