Are Metal Detectors effective in locating currency?

My grandma died in 1998 at 90yrs. old, she didn't believe in banks living through the 20th century.

She had a hell of alot of money saved, and the family thinks it's buried in the backyard. Anybody had any experiences using metal detectors?

They are one of the most expensive in the market but they are worth it, a friend of mine who works on a survey crew has one and he's shown me a ton of stuff he has found at parks, beach and most any place he goes for work.
