birth control hell
Hey, I was just wondering has anyone used mirena and what was your experience with it? I've had mine for two months and it has been giving me bad mood swings and today, OMGoodness, PMS like never before. I was crying, vomiting and cramping without the flow. I'm not trying to scare anyone who's thinking about getting it, this is just my experience and everyones body is different.
Oh, and as for my sex drive, what sex drive?

I was on Mirena when I first got on BC. I had the same experience - thought that BC was supposed to make things BETTER?? Anyways, I then started the NuvaRing and have virtually NO pms symptoms whatsoever since the dosage is so low. I MIGHT get super minor cramping the first day but then, nothing.
Just a suggestion. But, I know what you're going through!

I had to stop hormonal BC. It made me feel so totally crap that it just wasn't worth it. And I didn't get pregnant because I couldn't be bothered to have sex.
I did much better with barrier methods, and Billings.

Ortho tri cyclen is by far the best that I have had. I've been on it for almost 6 years. Maybe give that a try?

I'm on something similar to this. I have no mood swings, that I or anyone else can tell, no cramps, and a fairly even flow for about 6 days. I take it religiously and no slip ups yet. I suggest this!

does it hurt your libido, and did it make you gain weight? or increase your appetite or anything?
I had to go off of mine b/c for some reason (docs have no idea why, it's not bf related or cancer or anything as far as we know) I don't get my period on my own, and it's because I have low hormone levels. I wanted to see if I had gotten it back, but my boobs have shrunk right away.
I want to go back on, but I don't want the side effects.
Edit: I have been on Yasmin.

heh - I love my Mirena. I have Endometriosis (read; massive, incredibly painful bleeding for two weeks out of every three) and this is the only thing that has helped. I have had it in for a year and havnt had a single period since. Two thumbs up from me

When I tried Yasmin, I HATED it! Got off of it after the 2nd month, and I saw warning signs from the 1st month...I stayed on it an extra month just to see if it was my body readjusting to a diff. pill but that was not the case.
I have never gained weight because of ortho nor does it increase my appetite. As for hurting my libido, it definitely doesn't do that. Although I have noticed that I do need extra foreplay to be "ready", but since when is that a bad thing LOL.

Unfortunately everyone reacts differently to different birth control pills and methods, so comparing to others will not really help you. The best you can do is go to the doctor and try another method and hope that works.

I couldn't drop my "pudge" until I got off of ortho, my body didn't react well to that pill at all! Yasmin turned me into an irritable beyotch. I've been using the ring for a couple months and I feel like a carry a bit more water then when I was on Yasmin (prob due to the DRSP), but no significant weight gain. I'm started to feel like I'm a little extra bitchy when on any birth control at all. I feel so much more at "ease" when I take a break.... but I like the extra security, condomless sex, and i like being able to keep my period consistent.

I was on Triphasil (which is like ortho tri cyclen) for quite a while ..a few years.. but figured out all the hormones in it were making me hella depressed. I had regular, clockwork like periods tho.
My doc just recently switched me to microgestin - and I HATE it. It's a super low hormone pill and my periods haven't been regular in over 3 months. I bleed and spot in the middle of the pill cycle, and during the blank pill week, nothing happens at all. But I'm not depressed - although I don't have a libido like I did when I was on the triphasil. :P
Seems like I can't win...
I only take the pill because it lowers your chances of getting ovarian cancer (that's how my mom died). Anyone else know a form of bc that helps with that? (nuvaring, depo, etc?) I'd love to switch to something else..

Really? I LOVE the Mirena IUD... no bad sides whatsoever. Sex drive always up and running. Maybe try and stick it out another month. Sometimes it takes your body a while to adjust.
Now the pill... THAT sucked after a few years...

Well I've thought about getting off of the pill but I hate condoms and everyone seems to have a bad story about All other types of birth control....soooo I think I'll just stick to the pill LOL.
What do you think of the ring (besides the water retention)? I've considered it a bit but then I chicken out when I think of all the "experimenting" problems that happened when I was trying different b.c. methods years ago. It's funny how we settle for the lesser of two evils

I hated my Mirena at first because I had cramping and spotting for a few months, but afterwords I love it. My periods became almost nonexistent, but I still did get abdominal cramps.. sometimes more often than I liked, but having such short, light periods made up for that. I have had mine in for a little over 4 years now, and am ready to get it removed though. My periods are back with a vengeance, and I'm extra moody lately. I don't know what this is all about, but I'm gonna make an appt. with my Doc soon to talk to her about getting it taken out.

Read up on Implanon. It's a little rod inserted into your arm with no serious side effects. After about 6 months to a year your period disappears... I've had no side effects with it really, I always get bad cramps and headaches around that time of the month and mood swings...and now... NOTHING. I love it!

So true! I get too much breakthrough bleeding on the low dose pills, and the the higher doses make me feel like just crawling into a casket.
The best method (I find), is being lucky enough to encounter those dudes who've had vasectomies.

I've recommended it to two of my girl friends (who can never remember to take their BC) and they got it and LOVE it.
You NEVER have to worry about taking a pill every day at the right time, no ring insertion, nothing. I hadn't been on a form of BC in a couple years so I did have an on again off again headache for a couple weeks and my first period was about 2 weeks long, but it was just minor minor spotting and I haven't had the issue since.
My arm isn't sore from it and I had minor bruising for about 5 days and it went away. Doesn't get in the way of working out either... AND it's good for 3 years and starts working pretty much right away... and the day AFTER you take it out, you can begin trying to conceive if you want a baby

if you talk to your insurance company, you can ask them if they have a mail in RX program. You tell your doctor you need a three month supply prescription for a mail in pharmacy, they hand you the RX, you mail it off to your insurance companies pharmacy, and get three month supply at a time. It will save you about $20-$30 I believe.

If you have insurance they should cover it. You just pay your copay and you have to have an ultra sound done after insertion and it's annoyingly painful.
there are some complications with an IUD also - if you haven't had a baby, putting the iud in can be a little tricky, since after childbirth your cervix opens a little more, and it can be hard to put in.
Also people who haven't had a baby can have issues with it falling out or not sitting properly inside the uterus and cause the woman and her partner pain.
