Ok to work around a slight sharp pain in shoulder?
I have a slight sharp pain in my shoulder, that annoys me a little doing certain exercises
I can still do any exercise, but i feel a slight sharp pain doing so, so what i did was stop doing any exercises that gave me that pain. Now i do exercises where i dont feel the pain
is this ok to do? I just work around it

if you have had the pain for a long time you need to get it looked at. its good not to train it if it causes you pain because you could damage it more. you could do some arm band stuff or some swimming if that doesn't hurt too much.

I have a similar problem.. its more of the back of the shoulder and just hurts when i do certain shoulder exercises (mainly the sides). I have been putting heat on it and im gonna start taking some joint supporters to see if that helps it if not ill end up getting it looked at because im not trying to **** my shoulder.

It feels more towards the rear like right where the medial head meets the posterior. It's kinda hard to tell if its really deep, maybe halfway, because i can press on it firmly and feel and ache
Exercises that i can feel the pain are shoulder press, and incline press. If i use dumbbells, when i bring the db's from my knees up to my chest, i can feel it also. I can hop on the hammer strength, flat and incline with no issues. It's the barbell and dumbbells that annoy it.
I can actually work thru the pain if i want to, but i dont, because it's not painful enough to where i must stop. Muscle fatigue gets me before the pain does, but it's just an annoying sharp slight pain. If i put my right arm straight out and twist my arm back wards so my palm is facing toward the ceiling, i can definitely feel it
I can sleep on the shoulder and i wont even feel it

this occasionaly happends to me me I do alot of lateral delt raises. I found working the rotator cuff alot helped a bit, but other then that I have just always worked through it. If it is continuing to bug you, or if it gets more severe then I would definately get it looked at-it may have something to do with ligaments around the head of your humerous, they get damaged easily

It sounds like you have a tear in your rotator cuff. I come to that conclusion because you say there is no pain when you're on machines. Your rotator cuff helps stablize your shoulders when you do free weight presses. There are no STRETCHES in the world that will help a tear. You have to just LAY OFF OF IT. 1-2 weeks.
I would've lied if I told you this was easy.

Most likely it's impingement. Try the broom stretch
On the lookout for some good steroids/ph's

rb30: You need to get checked out by a othopedic doctor. I would say Nick is right you have a torn rotator cuff. you need to verify this before going on. The rehab of it is dependent on degree of damage.

Go and get a few sessions of deep tissue massage on the shoulder. If the problem is shoulder impingement, then you need to figure out what exercises are causing the problem. So, when you resume your shoulder training, add one exercise per workout and see if one of them causes you to get shoulder impingement. While it is different for different people, exercises like upright rows and side raises (well, badly done side raises) are common culprits.

Wouldn't a torn RC require surgical repair?

It depends on the degree of the tear. The OP, can still workout, so if it is a rc tear, then it's very minor, and the body will heal itself if he RICE + heat
I can see surgery if everything he did involving the shoulder would kill him, such as just raising his arm in any direction, holding his arm up etc.....
On the lookout for some good steroids/ph's
