Supplements and Liver Damage
Anyone comments/opinions would be greatly appreciated...
Recently i got my blood drawn, my liver numbers were way off the charts and very abnormal. I thought OK, i just came back from a concert, I had been smoking and drinking for the past week straight basically. I told the doctor all the supplements i had ever taken (Test boosters, cycles of NO and creatine and all the basic vitamins like fish oil and multi) I went off ALL supplements for about a month, got my blood drawn again and my numbers went back to normal. I wanted to prove to myself that supplements weren't the cause, so i jumped back on NO shotgun and NO synthesize. After finishing that cycle I went back to the doc to get my blood drawn for the third time. When the results came back my liver numbers were again way off the charts and a high amount of NO was found in my blood (obviously because of the supplements.) Can't find any articles/findings on this, obviously I will be done with those supplements forever, not like i HAD to have them to lift anyway, but better off stopping now than risking long term damage. Any of you have similiar experiences or know any links to research confirming this?
Thanks so much.

anything you'll find online are just peoples opinions just like this .... no one's going to do actual physical research with chemicals..and testing people...etc.. i mean anything 'not' natural such as food etc is going to Fk with your liver... question is..how far you're willing to go with this

Very true, thanks for the input...I know everyone is different. Wondering if I should just stop everything all together, just seems so risky if this is what it can do to your body but then again so many people take so many supplements, 20 billion dollar industry its just crazy.
Most likely just contain with the "safe" supplements if they can even be called that, protein, multi's and amino acids. Just lay off the creatine and NO products.

Dude even protein has some harmfull products in it which i recently learned about Monster Milk (makers of Muscle Milk).. tastes sooo fkin good...
Long story short... i wanted to quit Everything altogether...and decided once i finish taking what i currently have...im done with supps... just gonna spend more money on food...

Did you work out still when you were off your supplements? Or did you got off of them and cease working out as well?

Ya...i definitely know the importance of nutrition and its nice to have more money to spend on food (bags of costco chicken etc...).
I continued to work out 5 days a week, cardio and weights while off the supplements, diet has always been in check, rarely have cheat meals.
Don't know much from a medical/scientific perspective, only thing I can think of is just how everything affects people differently, some supplements work for some people, some don't, maybe i just have a "sensitive" or "reactive" liver. I know some protein, where the ingredients come from China can be harmful, I just use Optimum Nutrition Whey and Casein, couldn't imagine stopping those to, as i use whey before and after workouts for the quick digestion and a casein shake before bed. All my roommates are into supplements, makes me worried about some of my friends who have been taking them consistently for about 4-5 years, we are all now about 20 years old.
Currently I think I will stick with the protein/glutamine and a multi-vitamin and then get me blood re-tested in about 6 weeks again, to make sure the levels are going back to normal, maybe it was just a overdose of nitric oxide.
I body-build to essentially be healthier, so doesn't make sense for me to keep damaging my body in order to get bigger, when its just as possible without supplements.
Again any new information would be greatly appreciated, just kind of a scary thing to hear from your doctor, when all this time you thought you were helping your body, think of all those kids who drink/smoke on a daily basis, sucks to think that you could be the one in danger when your the one who doesn't do those things and keeps on a healthy diet 24/7.
Well we will see what happens as time progresses.

If you're worried about your liver start taking liver support supplements. Milk thistle comes to mind off the top of my head.

I created a similar thread after finding out that I have raised liver values http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=112817591 . Mine were only slightly elevated but I had actually taken the week off from both supplements and working out so in my mind there is a decent chance they could have been a bit higher had I not done that. How elevated were your liver values, numbers always help?
I have stopped taking Torrent by universal for the last month which of all the supplements I was taking had the profile I was most nervous about (which sucked because it was by far my favorite supplement) and will be getting tested again soon (I still take fish oil multi ultra peptide and real gains as well as CMZ). Its my personal and not particularly well educated view that it?s the ?cocktail? type supplements such as NO shot gun, NO Synthesize and maybe torrent which would have the most potential to cause problems especially because besides having massive quantities of many things they also use ester forms.
People are likely going to try to blame drinking on your liver values and maybe they are right, its hard to pin point causes of things when there are so many life variables
I know I didnt give you much scientific info (really any) considering the section u posted in but I thought some of it might help

I am considering supplementing with NAC to help with my liver values. Nothing like supplementing to help your liver when you suspect supplements may be causing your liver problems, good ol' fashioned irony..
