I love them. Feet closer together and a bit in front of you really burns up my quads.

I think free barbell works the core a bit more, but I still like it. Kind of like to do almost partial reps with them, not entirely locking out at the top.

Give em a go and see if you like them, I find I can get a bit deeper than with a regular barbell.

I definitely like them. I will sometime do both BB Front squats and Smith Front Squats in the same workout.

    Great thread BTW!

They can be a good mass builder and can help you focus on developing certain aspects of your legs, but don't do them exclusively.

Smith back squats are bad. Use a real bar.

More like a leg press than a squat.

Be sure to adjust your stance (usually in front of the bar a bit) to help avoid the torque on the lower back.

For those that have performed front squats on a smith, is it difficult to rotate the bar so it hooks on to the pegs? It just seems like it would be awkward and difficult to do with heavier weight.

yeah, thats the only downfall, i rest it on my body first, then turn it.. and try holding it with my hands while going down so it doesnt turn in. But i feel i can go much lower under a controlled movement and get a deeper burn with the smith front squats.

Most Smiths have safety lockouts, independent of the carriage, that you can set wherever you want, along the carriage's range of motion. Simply set these just below your lowest squatting position before your set. When you hit failure, if you're unable to turn the bar and lock-out the carriage, just set it down on the safeties, and get out from under it.
    No brain, no gain.
