personally I think that jumping rope is better. It works your wrists, forearms, and other parts that just regular cardio does not. Thats just my 2 cents

um, skipping rope IS cardio, right??

Anyway, i skip once in a rare while but i'm not a big fan of it because its really tough on my knees for some reason. Its a good warmup exercise though imo.

I do stair climbing (real stairs, not a machine) for my cardio now and it is def the most superior cardio i have ever done

yes, jumping rope IS cardio. I wouldn't reccomend jumping rope too much because it is a very repetitive motion and can be hard on the joints of the legs--especially if you are carrying extra weight. I think jumping rope is good once in a while, but I probably wouldn't do more than 20 minutes at a time. Its always best to mix up what you do for cardio.

I jump rope at least 5 times a week, most before I lift and a bit in between sets, but only for lengths of time 1-1.5 minutes straight. But.... I go mach 90, so I can bank over 1,000 jumps with ease. I have built my muscles on my body to handle that because of starting in the sporting arena as a child and then focusing mainly on basketball and leg muscles.... and believe me, they weren't built strong with squats that's for sure!!!!

If you can tolerate 30 minutes of jump rope - go ahead.
5 minutes and I'm burnt out - but I do it about 3 times a week - good warmup

If you want to vary your skipping routine some try some of these:

    Crossovers
    Double Jumps
    Triple Jumps (BLOODY HARD)
One leg at a time (Good for the calfs)
    Backward skipping
"The hardest part in lifting, is NOT to lift..." - Me

    First meet results:
    Squat 140kg (+15kg PR)
    Bench 130kg (+10kg PR)
    Deadlift 185kg (+25kg PR)

    Second meet results:
    Squat 175kg (+5kg PR)
    Bench 140kg (= PR)
    Deadlift 210kg (+5kg PR)

Triple jumps i never taught these could be possible ,
When i do hiit i go very fast like running on the spot one leg at a time alternating as i think thats the fastest way to go if you jump bought feet together the motion seems much slower

30 min of jump rope is pretty tough.
30 min of other kinds of cardio can be very easy or very tough.

    I like both.
60 minutes of modest cardio every day (about 80% maximum heart rate)
and then twice a week I do 3x3minutes of jump rope.
I'm hoping to eventually do 3x5 minutes of jump rope.
But its tough. The shirt is almost as wet from 9 minutes of jump rope as it is from 60 minutes of modest cardio.
But those who fight for right must remember St. Augustine's sage words,
"right is right even if no one is doing it...and wrong is wrong even if every one is doing it!"

Skipping rope IS cardio. Good luck if you think all kinds of cardio and 500 crunches is gonna get you lean.

rope skipping isn't bad for the joints , if always you know how to skip if you don't and start banging then yes it could be bad but for the rest its a great form of total body training

    skipping rope

Actually skipping rope improves joint health if done properly. And by done properly that means; you do them on a semi soft surface, you do'nt jump too high, and you use proper jumping form. As far as its advantages... how about 16 calories a minute burnt. That's about the same calories burnt if you were to run at the pace of 8.5 minutes a mile, but you never have to leave your living room.
