It's really up to your food philosophy. I personally don't buy the 1 gram of protein per .... of mass crap. I've gained muscles in my 4 years of training on way less than that amount. I usually do about 80-100, sometimes 120 if I'm going to a BBQ. I only take in a shake if I don't have enough food to eat for the night.
Up to you on this one. If you are worried, have shake and some protein food (eggs, tuna ... etc). Whole food >> supplements

he says you can have like one egg a day in the undereating phase.
so no your shakes are out of the question :P
seriously you got no reason to take any during the day anyway.
if u have a protein shake post workout and one pre bed its NOT that hard you could get 100g protein just from those 2 drinks.
i have 2 shakes every night i train. my post workout drink has a 40g scoop of protein and 300mls of milk which is 9 or so grams of protein. so that 50g from one shake. plus whatever protein is in the oats i have with it.. say 50g anyway.
then my pre-bed shake i have one scoop of xf up 2.0 which is 20g protein plus 300mls milk which is another 9g protein. so thats 30g pre bed and 50g post workout. 80 grams already without dinner. its not that hard buddy i think your really underestimating how much your eating a day.
besides ive found i really dont need that much protein to grow anymore...

I eat 4 strawberries, 2 pieces of string cheese, 2 small tomatoes, and 7 baby carrots during the undereating...and I basically nibble slowly all day.
Generally it's around 300 calories.
I would get a rpotein powder with little to no sugar, like Body Fortress (found at Wal-mart). 2 scoops of this has 230 calories and 52 grams of protein. If you can't find this, I would get something similar.
And I can easily get 100 grams of protein during overeating, between chicken and a small protein drink.

VVVVVVVVVVVVV
You were eating NO carbs, and very little if any fat. You need both of them in order to have energy. It wasn't the diet, it was your food choice. ALL protein. And I doubt you had enough calories overall anyway. One day you had like 500 calories. That's not enough.
If you have more carbs and fat I guaruntee you would feel better.Last edited by KJR246; 02-11-2009 at 03:28 AM.

Agreed, gents. I read somewhere that roughly .6-.7x bodyweight is sufficient to put on mass. I guess it's just real hard to break the whole broscience thing. For years I've been shooting for 1.5x bw in protein, which translates to close to 300 grams. Maybe that's why I've never been lean!
I'm worrying a little bit too much, I guess (I have that tendency). I need to give it a bit more time, it's only been a week.
Also, my meal is too close to my workout to have a post-workout protein shake. Would a pre-workout whey shake be fine?
But as an aside: what do ya'll think i should do if I have to be up for 24 hours (duty calls for it)? I can take a small nap or two during but I can't get a full block of sleep.Last edited by stephendonald; 02-11-2009 at 07:24 AM.

I need everyones opinion...
I am currently doing the stronglifts 5x5 program. Very similar to Ori's program me thinks. Heavy compound lifts. Every session weights are increased. After lifting...should I consume protein with 15-30 grams of simple carbs...or just go straight to my feed? I am shooting for weight loss here.

You don't have to have a shake right after. Do it however you want. If I don't get enough protein then I'll add a shake, but I just start with my meal.

Brad Pilon has done a ton of good work in dispelling the "x hours without meal will screw up your metabolism" b.s.
He has a ton of good research and studies.
I think the "eat every 2.5 hours" thing was invented by supplement companies personaly. There is absolutely no science showing that "your metabolism goes haywire unless you eat every x hours". It's pure BS.

Mmm, I am already on his list. I think he's friends with Ori or something. Can't remember where the original signup form was.

This is his blog, but really, all the best stuff, the goodies and the scientific research is on his email list, so signup for that. He's peddling something a bit different than Ori. Undereating and overeating for entire days instead of day vs. night. But their arguments are pretty similar.

I got gang raped by a bunch of Misc freaks who didn't like a post I made stating that I thought everyone should deadlift and squat. They called in reinforcements and hit me hard.
I get about 30 positive reps for every neg, but these guys had super rep power and hit me into the stone ages.
I got negged for stating my opinion in a respectful manner. But there are far too many 120 pound guys who know it all on this board...
No sweat though...I've gained back 11,000 in the last month...

Its recommended in the book and I'm finding it a swell recommendation indeed. Does wonders to curb appetite and revitilize you. Its pretty sweet.

Good point.
I know Ori in the WD book and on his radio show recomends full body workouts that don't last long.
I think that Ori has been correct about so many things that he has another good point on the full body workouts compared to the typical gym members that only train chest and arms.
I just finished up about 6 weeks of full body workouts and I am feeling sore like a running back the day after the game so it's back off time for a few days.
Strength and size gains are better on the WD than eating 6 meals a day IMO.
