I'm guessing it's drug related (steroids, uppers, etc.) ... but I could be wrong. If I am, please enlighten me.
Because soccer is extremely taxing on the cardio... You can die if you exercice too much at once. Soccer is like an explosive sport (like sprinting) mixed with endurance.

If you're concerned about heart palpitations, consult your doctor. He or she may recommend further evaluation such as heart monitoring tests. Seek prompt medical attention if heart palpitations are accompanied by:
* Dizziness
* Shortness of breath
* Chest discomfort or pain
* Fainting
Thanks for the info.

Sorry babe, no cardio
EPO?
Doubt it, I think the deaths are rare and therefore can be presumed to be genetic conditions etc

I'd just like to add that I've had heart palpitations before and I've been to the doctors 3 times for it. One time they hooked a 24hr monitor to me and everything checked out fine. Had 2 other heart tests done, a CAT scan. In fact they did a ultrasound like machine and checked every valve.
They actually think mine is caused by anxiety or panic attacks.
I'm just saying don't panic about it, its most likely nothing to worry about, but like that other poster said I'd definitely check if you are getting light headed, shortness of breath, etc. [though again they too can be a panic attack]

They run around in hot weather. They can be running for like 45 mins at a time.

its usually secondary to cardiac arrhythmias. Unfortunately the first sign is sudden death
hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is generally the cardiac disease that what the "star player in the championship game" dies from

Can we get some actual statistics, I mean soccer is probably the most popular sport worldwide, and I'd guess the most amount of players so it only stands to reason more would die while playing it. BTW, hearing about a couple people dropping dead, out of millions that play, doesn't constitute 'so many players dropping dead'

Alot of soccer players suffer trauma from heading or chesting the ball (that thing can fly like 130km per hour). Also, alot take amphetamines before a game. Combine that with running 15km a game and possible dehydration and you have a recipe for dropping

Not to jump the gun here... But I find it extremely difficult to believe that the cause is congenital defects. I'm sure those soccer players undergo extensive medical testing and checkups before they are OK'd to play such an intense sport. I think it's fairly safe to say that if they did, in fact, have a medical condition, the doctors would've found it in routine testing.

Most arrhythmias are transient so they would not be picked up. Most EKG's look at 6-10 seconds of a heart rhythm. Even in the hospital when we're really concerned about an arrhythmia we run holter monitors which can record heart rhythms for >24 hours and even then they may be negative despite someone having an arrhythmia,
Often times congenital defects may be completely asymptomatic and not even produce murmurs. Checking everyone with a cardiac echocardiogram is not cost-effective and there are other major aspects to consider. In Italy, they did a great study that ALL athletes had EKG's and I believe 2D echos (maybe not, i read it a couple years ago).....nonetheless the people with ANY abnormality (even if it was something likely never to cause a problem) were BANNED from sports FOR LIFE......that's pretty major considering the low number of deaths
When I was a senior in college I swam against a team who lost one of their swimmers to a massive heart attack during his practice. He came down with a viral syndrome of some sort the week prior and likely developed myocarditis, pericarditis or myopericarditis and died during an intense workout.....these things are not completely avoidable
