Don't squat in any shoes that have a compressable sole; the gel makes each push into the floor an uncertain one, as some force is absorbed by the shoe.

Either use a flat footed hard soled shoe like Chuck Taylor's, or squat shoes, or go barefoot.

Anything with a solid sole that wont compress is good for squats.

I've always squatted in running shoes... not ideal but the shoe I have now is pretty decent for squatting. Ideally you want a solid sole with no give... raised heel.

People advocate the Chuck Taylors converse shoe due to its flat sole. I never would have assumed that shoe to be a flat hard sole, being a basketball shoe... but its a popular squat shoe so it must be hard.

other than that, weightlifting shoe or bare feet.

Depends on your squat. For most recreational lifters almost any flat soled shoe - even some cross trainers - will work (less cusion the better)

For power lifting, get the right equipement. Just do a search for power lifting supplies...Iron mine is a good place to start.

Never, ever, ever squat with running shoes.

My advice: If in doubt, take your shoes off completely and squat barefoot.
