Good ideal Omega 3 supplement for my mom?

My mom would like to know what is an ideal amount of omega 3 for her to take?? I told her i'm sure its the same as males but I thought i'd check (i've heard 3 to 6 grams a day). And with that could you recommend a good omega 3 supplement for her to take (animal omega fine lol? thats what i'm going to start on). Thank you

For a dose - it depends on what she would want it for.... So -->
Although MOST smaller female type people, for general health, should have between 4-6g. If she has arthritis or auto-inflammatory conditions she would benefit from a higher dose (9-12g a day). Similarly, if she had problems such as depression, then she could benefit from the addition of higher doses with specific EPA/ DHA ratio's.

In regards to a type - A good, basic fish oil supplement would be perfect. No need for 'brand names' or anything expensive.... Just double check that it is FISH oil (not Cod Liver oil or something like that), and that it doesn't have added things (eg: Vit A, or Vit E or Vit D < - these things can build up to toxic levels in the body if taken in excess).

Well I put my Mom on NOW Foods Ultra Omega, and she takes 2-3 of those per day (or so she tells me, I have my doubts). The thing is there are different concentrations of fish oil nowadays so 'how much oil', isn't what you need to know. You want her to obtain a minimum of 1000 mg (1 gram) of DHA and EPA in combination per day, regardless of what product she wants to use.

Getting that 1000 mg requires more or fewer softgels depending on the product.

Most fish oils are at 300 mg (combined EPA and DHA) per softgel, so you need to take 3-4 to get near that 1000 g minimum with either 900 or 1200 mg.

With the NOW Ultra Omega, they're at 750 mg per softgel, so you only need to take 1-2 to get near the 1000 mg minimum with either 750 or 1500 mg.

The other cool thing about the UO is that it's enteric coated and odor controlled, so it doesn't burp up on you. A lot of fish oils have vitamin E added as a preservative (antioxidant). Since the oils are unstable, and oxidized oils are so bad for you, that's a good idea. But there's so little used for that purpose (a few IU, no more) that there's no risk of overdose, even if you're taking a standalone vitamin E supplement too.

FWIW, I'm not affiliated with NOW, I just think it's a good product.
