I have the same problem. It is a cracked sternum. Mine does it all the time. There is nothing that can be done about it, but you'll get used to it eventually. If you are worried about it you should go to the doctor, but he will most likely tell you that it's just something you have and he can't do anything. Mine came from me getting hit real hard one time playing football with friends. It just pops sometimes when I stretch or when I do an excercise in thy gym that causes that area to strech. Like overhead presses or sometimes bench pressing. Anyway it doesn't affect me.

Oh, and btw mine hurt for a while after it happened (like a year) when it would pop. Not like excruciating pain, but I could feel it. Now it just feels like a joint when it pops.

same here. used to hurt but feels like any other part cracking anymore. I never knew what caused it but I guess it's the same thing everyone here is dealing with.

I've had this before when I used to be able to bench press. It sometimes felt good and sometimes hurt and it cracked down the middle of my sternum.

The sternum can be divided into 3 parts.

The Manubrium is on the top.
The Gladiolus is in the middle, also called the body of the sternum.
The Xiphoid Process is on the bottom.

When we are born, it is divided into pieces, however it solidifies as we age. The Manubrium and the Gladiolus ossify at a very old age, as in 70s and older. There exists an immobile joint between the two until then. The cracking you guys are hearing is coming from there, just as a knuckle will crack. It's a release of nitrous oxide from between that joint. It's not dangerous, but it can be a bit startling.

this. It is those gases releasing from the synovial fluid. Actually it's good to release those gases.

Its called costochondritis. Inflammation or swelling or injury can cause this condition. Millions of people have it and dont even realize it. Other than corticosteroids, nsaids, or pain medications there is no treatment for it. Most times it will go away on its own, though it can come back with irritation occasionally, or in a few may be annoyingly permanent. Further questions look up costochondritis on any medical site for more info.
