Shoes for Deadlifts / Squats / Power Cleans

What are good shoes for deadlifts / squats / power cleans? I don't like the old school converse shoes.

Would something like Nike Free work? Let me know some other options. Thanks!

I'm not sure why you don't like 'em, but I switched to the Chuck Taylors and LOVE THEM. They don't look that great, but they are pretty good lifting shoes IMHO.

I just bought a new pair of the shox with the fancy see through bubbles in the back, they compress under weight, not a good shoe for heavy work unless you got some wicked balance.

    Asic Splitsecond wrestling shoes.

for deadlifts, if you don't go barefoot, any flat/stable skater shoe will also work.

for the squats and OLY lifts, get specific shoes. check these for some examples and comments:

I love barefoot deads and squats. But my gym gets pissy about it. I will review those threads and thank you for everyone's help thus far.

The main problem is that I only have a sports chek and source for sports and they don't have any of those shoes recommended. I hate the all star chuck taylors because they have an unstable feeling to them.

Not sure what the difference is between these two to tell you the truth. I squat with good form and go to parallel for 6-8 reps lol.

Wider stance (wider than shoulders), sitting back (hip break), going to about parallel = powerlifting style.

For these, any shoes with a firm, flat sole will do.

Narrower stance (shoulder-width or narrower), dropping down (knee break), all the way to the bottom = olympic style.

For these, weightlifting shoes with a raised heel (usually wood) are ideal.

I've been using Nike Free Trainers for the past 2 years and I love them. I actually bought some shox like the ones XXX666 was talking about but I won't even try lifting with those. Nike Free Trainers FTW.

I notice squatting barefoot for the first time I went up a bit too 2 days ago, but I wonder whether decreased ROM (admittedly only 2 cms) would be accounting for some of it

How the hell would a barefooted squat decrease your ROM???
Potentially it would decrease your deadlift, the distance would be "in the noise" or otherwise ignorable.

There is no difference between raising the bar and lowering the floor.

    edit: oops, read "deadlift".

UA Evades. They are simply amazing. And since I do quite a bit of lateral training, they are perfect for it. Only my older Nike Shox have been more comfortable, but, as someone mentioned before, they Compress when lifting heavy.

Meh, I've used chucks, sambas, running shoes, barefoot, do-win olympic shoes, tims...I think unless you're using BIG weight it doesn't really matter. I lift in my do wins, but have lifted in other shoes and haven't noticed much difference.

    skippies

    I used to breakdance back in the day. So i use my old pairs of "skater shoes" for deadlifts and squats. Like these;

    Adidas Campus
    http://www.preisvergleich.org/pimage...5__6478_40.jpg

    Puma Basket
    http://www.footage.com.au/2007/blog_...ket_whtblk.jpg

I knew I'd find a use for them old skippies.

Running shoes are not the way to go for these exercises.

If you aren't doing ass to ankles squats and cleans than any flat/incompressible sole will work.

If you want to get low I would highly recommend Adidas weightlifiting shoes, Do-wins, Nike has a new oly shoe that are all good. I have the Adidas adistar 2008 weightlifting shoes and got them from dynamic-eleiko.com and did a phone order from them. They are pricey but worth there weight in gold since you can go a bit deeper and you have the same movement every time.

If you're lifting in regular shoes the shoes compress and throw off your lift and every rep is slightly different and you won't maximize your results.
    Hope this helped a bit

I just wear anonymous nike running shoes.... I never noticed a problem

the floor at the squat rack (as well as any other free weight area in the gym) has rubber padding that is softer than the average rubber weight-room floor material, and I never had issues with balance or anything..... I aso never go SUPER super heavy so maybe thats why...
