    Amino Acid Supplements...Are they Necessary?

So I take them and think they help me, but the Cleveland Clinic website says this

Amino acid supplements do not help you gain muscle and they can actually cause an amino acid imbalance in your body. Amino acids (the building blocks of protein) are naturally found in foods in balanced amounts.

So what do you guys think? I was looking to show a friend the wide range of protein quantities that are recommended by different people/sites and happened to come across this.

My Dr. says the same thing but what the hell does he know, he only has a doctrine degree.

Serious, I think if you supplement to much Lecuine and not the others it can cause in imbalance. I think I read that in a huge BCAA thread, on my next break I will look for it or maybe someone else can chime in.

    I think it's fine to supplement BCAA's if they're at a 2:1:1 ratio.

No, amino acid supplements are not "necessary" but they can help if you can't get all your protein requirements from whole foods. Some amino acids are Essential (can't be made by the body, need to obtain from diet) while others are non-essential (can be made by the body). AA imbalances can occur.

    Question

They are quite useful when on a carb restricted diet. When the body does not have enough carbs it starts to utilize Leucine as a fuel source ( this is not the only fuel source). If you you do not supplement with BCAA's where do you think the body gets it's Leucine from????

They certainly are no necessary, I just love the recovery aspect of Amino Acids. I take the summer off of everything and boy do I miss the day or less recovery time, also the nice little boost in the gym. All depends what you are looking for.

Weird, I was going to start a thread about Amino Acids this morning.
But I browse the site and there is already one started.

So, thanks to the OP for starting this thread.
    Some good info in here.

I have been taking Amino Acids three times a day with my protien shakes.
Started thinking the other day is this really necessary.
I cant really notice any benefit from the Amino's and im getting protein from the shakes and diet.

So, should I cut out these extra Amino Acid supps I am taking?

I think is a broad subject and depends on what ur using them for

Aminos in their free form state act differently in the body then when mixed with others

    For example,

Arginine causes an increase in blood flow (increased nitric oxide)
    Tryptophan makes you sleepy
    Beta-Alanine increases endurance
Glutamine may (debatably) increase recovery and/or improve digestive health

...and these effects tend to be elevated when taken on an empty stomach

IMO BCAA's are great intra-workout when cutting with a caloric deficit,
but not as necessary when eating maintenance or bulking
It's not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential - Bruce Lee

If your on a pre-contest diet they sure cant hurt. Other than that as long as your overall diet is on point (ie-getting lots of protein daily) and especially pre/post workout meals,I dont feel they are needed...at least they made zero diff in my training/recovery.
