What is hypertrophy?

I am trying to get as much revision off this site for achieving my goals. however i keep seeing this hypertrophy word keeping popping up.
A rough guest would be getting a good physique........but you tell me.
Also i need a little advice on how i would get a fine body but still build strength but the body part is more important. Would lifting heavy with less reps be better for getting the results i want quicker or the oppoiste.
What works best???

Hypertrophy is increasing the size of the muscle cells through training diet etc.

Lets take a look at the base words "hyper" and "trophy". Hyper can meet excited, or greater. Trophy can mean a symbolic item of achievement or wife used to mask inadequet insecuirities.

So, by my book - hypertrophy means excited wife. So we lift to excite our wives, or gf's, or Fb's. Pretty accurate def.
