I can't take whey, was having major reactions so I asked this forum and was turned on to either:
- Hemp Protein
- Rice
- Pea
After researching all of them, I felt that pea protein would be the best option. Hemp does not have enough protein in one shake and the rice is made of brown rice (which also don't suit me).
I went to Vitamin Shoppe yesterday and bought the only one they had there - Olympian Labs Pea Protein.

Even the store manager had never tried it or knew anyone that had, he was very interested to get my review.
It seems to be the same on this forum, that's why I'm writing this...

First and Foremost - Protein & Nutrition
I'm just starting to learn all this so by no means an expert. However, the store manager and a good friend (who knows much more) compared the data on the facts sheet and were both very impressed.
It seems almost identical to whey protein (I'm still sure whey is better in some ways).
It has 25g of protein per scoop. 105 calories, no fat.
Taste, Smell, Texture
SMELL - It comes only in Vanilla flavor (which works out well for me). When you open the box it smells JUST like Vanilla whey protein.
I put the two next to each other and can barely tell the difference.
TASTE - Not so great. But there is a good and a bad.
"Bad" is that it's a bit chalky and just tastes WEIRD. I wouldn't say it tastes like vegetables. It tastes kind of like someone has worked really hard to MASK a bad taste. But still, it's not "bad" - I drank it without a problem.
"Good" is that there is NO AFTER TASTE!! Lots of the whey protein I've taken has that "artificial sugar" after taste. Not this one. Once you gulp, no taste really left.
I took it with a pear and could barely tell. Just took a bit after each major gulp.
TEXTURE - REALLY powdery. Not really a problem for me, it was easier to mix than whey.
Overall Review
I'm fairly impressed! It didn't react badly with me at all and I'm VERY happy to have found a strong protein I can actually take (thanks to YOU guys and your help).
If you're having second thoughts, don't. The box was about $25, it's worth a test - you just may like it.
If you're VEGAN - hands down, you gotta try this.
If I could, I'd still take the whey likely, but I'm allergic, so this is a great second option and I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

actually gemma's really good...i've been using it for about six months. I have the same problem with whey as the OP, and gemma is a great way around it.
price per pound is much less than whey, with a bioavailability thats very high as well. also certified non-GMO, and the premium flavors are pretty good.Bryce Lewis, IFPA CPT
