Blood Blister Under My Nail
Sorry in advance for the lame injury thread, but I'm hoping someone can help. I was half asleep this morning when I got into my shower and I slammed the glass door into my middle finger causing a nice little blood blister under the nail.
I've done this before on a MUCH smaller scale and the nail grew out, shedding the dead cells. But I've seen other people get one's the size of this recent one that stay forever, leaving an ugly black number under the nail. I would like to avoid that if possible, so I wanted to see if you guys had any insight. Will my nail grow, shedding the dead cells out? Or do I need to take a sharp needle and poke through the nail to release all of the blood? Or is there something else I can do?
Here's a pic...not sure if you can see, but it's actually green where the cuticle is.

The fancy word for this is a subungal haematoma. It's very small compared to when treatment would be required. That will heal by itself and grow out. If it was about double the size then you would think about putting a needle through the nail and draining it, but that's not necessary.

And the sixth and final rule, if this is your first night at cheat club, you have to cheat.

Actually, heat the needle in a flame first then apply to the nail. Only required when it is very pianful.
The science is out there!

Yes, sorry, I should have said I was referring to sterile hypodermic needles, if you just have a normal sewing needle then definitely heat it up in a hot flame first, like a gas stove, not a cigarette lighter.

The heat helps with the piercing, not just sterility. I have used a cigarette lighter successfully to heat a needle for a toe-nail piercing.

It doesn't hurt nearly as much as it did. I just hope that it grows out and doesn't just stay there. I tried using a safety pin, heated it up to red hot, but it wouldn't penetrate. I've heard a paperclip works well since it has more mass and will stay hotter longer.
Should I just leave it alone at this point perhaps because it's been 3 days or should I try using a paperclip and let out some of the dried blood?
Thanks for the info.

might sound weird but works everytime...get a really small drill bit, heat it up and just sit there and twist it by hand until it penetrates. (yes redneck)

Damn, that sounds nasty bro. I'd rather take my chances with a paperclip if I go that route lol.

Seriously I wouldn't go the paperclip route you can damage the nail bed even further and end up with a f*cked up nail forever.
It grows out, depends but it can take months. It's just one of those things.

Yeah, I've settled on waiting it out. Oh well, could be worse, right?
