One works better for some than the other does.

For beginners, barbell is generally recommended since it is easier to make jumps in weight used, although both can be effectively used.

Using dumbbells requires alot more control than barbell bench press. I like using dumbbells more cause I believe they work your chest better if you do them right.

Depending on what your goal is whether it be strength or whatever. From a powerliftering stand point Barbell press will help you train more for mass and strength. If you ever notice you can Bench a lot more than what you can press with dumbell's. Not saying that dumbells wont help you gain strength, but it works your muscle in a different way. You have to stabilize much more with dumbells than you would with the barbell. Dumbells are good because you can take out a lot of secondary muscle groups and also helps you shape and sqeeze the muscle that you are working. Neither is better than the other I switch back and forth between Barbell and dumbell. It all depends where you are at in you training and what you are trying to accomplish. Although if you are a beginner, you should start with dumbells. This will help you on your form and you dont have to go heavy to work the chest. Then switch to barbell when you think you are ready

whats wierd for me is that i max a relatively low weight for barbell bench (185) but am able to do relatively high dumbell bench compared to my bodyweight. i dont get it because bench is supposed to be the one you go heavier in because you use both arms. anyone else have this ?

I actually started out on dbs and moved to bb later on. It's been four months and bbs STILL feel weird to me. I now lift the same with dbs and bb. (I mean db + db weight = bb weight)

Barbell is alright but I don't seem to enjoy it any more.
It's fine but eventually you will plateau, like I did on bench and curls until I added bb.
