I do both because they engage in different muscles. I don't do them both every week, but sometimes I do my squats, followed by plie squats.

I would do squats one session, plie the next. Trying to do both in one session is a bit much.

I have never had a problem doing them both in the same session. I pre exhaust my muscles during my heavy squats, and can do much lighter weight for the plie. I typically just use anything from a 15-30lb db.

I don't think we do plie squats the same because I know I couldn't hold a 135# db in my hands

When I have a day to focus on hams glutes and another for legs in general, I'll do plie squats on the hams/glutes focus day and regular back squats on my legs day.
I used to do plie squats on a smith machine, but I feel like I get much better results with a DB. And I cant imagine using a regular bar... way too afraid Id end up sittin on my ass!
