The Squat Headache
Recently falling victim to this horrible and irritating headache I decided to do some research on it. The headache I am referring too occurs after squatting heavy or for high reps (I was doing the 20-rep-squat program). It occurs in the back of the head, near the top of the neck. The headache prolongs throughout the next several days, or until the next time you squat. The headache can also reoccur during the day or night when "jacking off," having sex, or moving the head side to side. The headache is throbbing.
Solution 1:
If you are putting the bar on top of your traps opposed to "low-bar" squats, stop doing so. Place the bar under the traps and on the shoulder shelf. The headache is caused by the overwhelming pressure on the upper-trap. This sends the pain signals to the back of your head. You may have pinched a nerve and you will want to take a break from squatting, and when you pick it back up, make sure to place the bar lower.
Solution 2:
If you get any other symptoms, such as dizziness, insomnia, disorientation, or loss of vision. You may want to seek medical help. But it most scenarios, this is not the case.
Your headache is most likely caused by bar placement. It seems so simple. People may tell you that you are breathing wrong or your BP is to high. But in 90% of squat (back of the head) headaches this is not the case.
