For me, it was because "Clips" was the only real nickname I'd ever been given.
I was smoking a big ole joint on a hill with a bunch of girls during my first week of college and when it got down to a roach, I busted out a keychain that was a pair of roach clips that was made to look like a little butterfly knife. One of the girls, who I'm still friends with, lawled and said, "Oh my God! Your name is now 'Clips'! Everyone call him 'Clips' now!"
In my two years at that school, I met a lot of people and some didn't even know my real name aside from "Clips"! lol. I don't smoke weed anymore though.

I figured that not many people would connect "stealthy" as an adjective for "swimmer" so I put stealth_swimmer together cus I figured nobody else would have it, so therefore I wouldn't have to worry about creating a username AND remembering numbers after it. And indeed, there have only been a few places I've come across on the internetz where the name is already taken.

My last user name here was xXBiggieXx and the name biggie comes from my first ever username on the internet which was "Bigfoot", Roxie shortened That to "biggie" along time ago and I've gone by it ever since.
