Welcome. Good for you that you are taking this big step.
You're right, AA is not the only way. I know of several people who have umpteen years of stable, solid, quality recovery without ever having stepped into the rooms of AA.
Me, I needed the structure, guidance, tools, camaraderie, influence, accountability, sponsorship and belonging that I got from being a member of AA. Left to my own devices had got me in the mess I was in. I didn't trust myself to find my own way. I had to listen and be willing to do what was asked of me. I was scared and knew I didn't want to drink any longer. All that AA offered me, helped me get out of myself and focus on a much bigger picture besides my own drama and problems. I was absolutely sick of being caught up in self and feeling/acting like a victim. It felt good to take responsibility. I am so grateful for how I grew from giving up control, surrendering and allowing others with good sobriety to guide me. I can't say enough about having a program, working it and having fellowship with other sober people. It taught me how to live, and I am a completely different person because of it, and for that I am very grateful.

For me, I come away from meetings (NA) typically with some sense of peace. They center me for some reason. I also think the 12 steps is probably one of the best self-help programs out there and is needed by probably 90% of the planet's population. Everyone has to choose their own path and for any of us, it is foolish to reject a tool, particularly if it isn't exclusionary. Remember, we carry a tool BOX of recovery tools, not just a single tool. Staying clean and loving it.
I've had enough cheese; now get me out of this trap.

What's the hardest part of your day?
For me it's the mornings. When I get up, especially when the house is empty, I have to decide if I'm going to control my demons or they're going to control me. On the flip side evening is the best. I read my kids a book during bedtime and lie down with them for awhile. I get quality face time with my wife and I don't feel anxious while passing the time.
