Hair length for figure competitions?
Silly question, but does anyone think that hair length is a big part of judges decision? I want to go shorter still, but not sure if that will put on damper on my placing....I find shorter hair is so much easier to work with ever day when time is limited!
Any opinions?

Barbie dolls with muscles is always a good look. You can go shorter, but it does not always help. Longer hair makes you look sexier - short hair is still sexy but depending on your body type you can look too hard. Remember most of the judges are men so the majority would prefer long hair.

You are right! That is what I am afraid of! I show in May, so I don't think that is time enough to really grow it out before the show...I am 36, so long hair on some of us may make us look older...Some women my age can wear long hair and look great! I don't know what I would look like..LOL !
Thanks for your input

I'm not doing comps yet, just starting beginning to train again after my second baby, but I'm happy I decided to click on this thread. I never would have thought hair mattered.
Question...
If I look just awful when I try to grow out my own hair, would it be best to keep it short or just pay the expense to get hair extensions? I don't think I would want to keep long hair all the time to be honest...
I just look better with short hair *shrug*. But wouldn't getting extensions just for shows and the getting them removed just be a costly pain in my butt?

Thanks for the ideas of extentions, but as some of you mentioned, the money involved could be a lot in the the end..I am a poor mommy/wife and college student! LOL But, I do like short hair too...
I have had extremely short hair at one point and was confused on my gender preference ( Of course, there is nothing wrong with that
Anyway, thanks for your responses!

Although long hair may help, remember that you and your true personality needs to show through. I can remember a competitor who competed with long hair - a wig basically and it did not look like her, and then come to find out she had short hair and competed the next day like that, and did much better in her placings. Maybe her confidence shone through more with short hair.
You need to have your best package put forth, and whether it be long hair, medium or short, just as long as your true personality is shining through, your most confident self needs to be presented on stage.
You can get extensions, or buy the clip in hair and then you have it for another show. Or you can buy a weft (a long piece of hair - I mean really long) and buy the clips that you put in your hair, and then cut the weft to the length you need to fit your head, and sew the clips on the hair. It is a little cheaper than buying the package of hair with the clips.

If you look good with short hair, I wouldn't stress too much over it.... There's plenty of pro fitness/figure competitors with both short and long hair. Jamie Eason comes to mind for short hair (of course). She's gorgeous and I couldn't imagine her with long hair. Do what you feel comfortable with and looks the best with your face

Longer hair makes you look sexier...you can't be serious? There are plenty of beautiful figure girls with short hair and they do win shows! Please show me in the guidelines where it says they prefer long hair. You are judged on your physique...not the length of your hair.

Correction, judges can have a preference on how they would like to see your wear your hair if it is long. But they are not judging you on your hair length period. I don't want all girls with short hair coming into this thread thinking they have to grow their hair out or use extensions that's ridiculous. I've placed very well in figure shows against girls with long hair. It's all about your physique, confidence, smile, competition color, suit color, makeup, etc. It about how well you present your total package on the stage.

Thanks for all the ideas...I know everyone means well....I do like my short hair, so we will see how it goes come May.. Long hair sucks in the south in the summer anyways! LOL...the heat is crazy here! I have seen some crazy awesome short hair as well as long hair. I guess, I hope that I have a short hair loving judge....I would lose if my husband was a judge...he would much rather that I have longer hair, but yet, he is not having to deal with it! -

Jamie Eason is so flip'n cute! And yes, she does look great with her hair the way it is. Thanks for the response....I just had noticed that a lot of figure girls had long hair, but then I think, like others, (hopefully) it doesn't matter that much, being that it is the whole package..

Have a bunch of figure girls in a line up with long hair...they look like clones of each other. So throw in a couple girls with great packages and short hair and they stand out...jmo
I never looked good with long hair...my hair was long for years...I have the face to pull off my short hair and I love it!
Good luck to you!!

Men are the judges. Sure there are girls who rock the short hair. See my second post.
Jamie Eason's hair is not short in my opinion. Short would be Nathalie Benson's hair.

I competed this year, placed and have short hair. I think the style is just as important as the length. If you look matronly, the judges will hate that.
As long as you have a up to date short cut you should be fine.
Here is a link to my pics and you can see how short my hair was.

I did see your second post. I'm not sure where you compete, but there are normally women judges on the panel as well...not just men.

I have done all federations, but am referring to my most recent experience - which is the CBBF/NPC - and they are mostly men.

I got 2nd in Jr. Masters, but didn't do well in the open.
I am doing another show March 28th and hoping to place better in my height class.
I want to qualify for National so bad!

I don't consider your hair to be short either. I would think this is more medium. I am thinking of a very short hair - like the girl in the pink with the dark hair - that would be short to me.
Yours still has movement.
Your have a great lower half by the way. Nice calves. Most would kill for that.

i THINK IT DEPENDS ON YOUR OVERALL LOOK, AS LONG AS IT IS CLEAN AND STYLISH, ETC. IVE SEEN SOME GIRLS WITH REALLY SHORT HAIR DO WELL AND THEN OTHERS NOT DONE SO WELL. OVERALL IT SEEMS AS IF LONGER HAIR IS THE TREND BUT MOSTLY DEPENDS ON YOUR OVERALL PACKAGE...

Same here. I am hoping to qualify for Nats at the Red River Classic. I am considering doing a show to qualify for 2010 Team Universe. So this year is going to be very exciting. Congrats on getting second in the JrM. You will make it in the open competitions. JrM is a good way to hone yourself in.

My husband is the same as yours! I was a little scared too when I chopped all my hair off then went to watch a competition for the first time! But I really think (and hope) that it is all about total presentation and confidence. Some women can totally rock the short hair look, and if you are one then do it! Long hair isn't always the best look for everyone!

Allison you are correct with your opinion of competitors in the CBBF(Canada). I live in Winnipeg, where the Head Judge for the CBBF lives. She has told my wife & many competitors that I have trained, that she prefers LONG HAIR in no uncertain terms.

In the last 3 contests I've been in the tall class winners all had short hair. Usually they say go with really long or really short hair. Long hair you can then pull over your shoulder to show your back and then short hair you don't have to worry about. If you hair is a so-so length, you may not be able to get it to rest over your shoulder to show your back.

there are some really beautiful competitors out there with short hair...from shoulder length to pixie cut...take mary elizabeth lado for example...i've never seen her with longer than shoulder length. there is a really awesome black competitor, i cannot remeber her name, but her hair is SUPER short...and she is in a ton of magazines and does really well in shows.
i think you should do what you really like. if you would never peg yourself as a blonde barbie doll type, then why would you go on stage that way? i want to compete for the first time this spring, and i have every intention of doing exactly what i feel comfortable with. if i want to wear dredlocks, then i'll rock them...it's all about how you carry it off...and what image you want for yourself.

CORRECT! In some it makes you look older. I'm 48 and I have long hair down pass my bra line and I straightened and I get compliments on making me look younger that way.. long is good.
But then.. look at Jamie Eason? short bob hair cut which makes it for her! she looks awesome! to ea. it's own!
