Why Prisons dont work...

my view on prisons is that they should be replaced by work camps

prisoners will work in different fields starting from road building to manufacturing work
and will be given a chance to learn a profession

so those who want to come back to normal life will come out with a qualification to be able to turn their life around.

It will also solve the problem of prisons being a burden on taxpayers and will instead generate production of goods and services.

I can see how this sounds good but at the same time doesn't this sound a bit like slavery? Thats kind of how i see jail/prison anyways though.

I forgot to add

prisoners will earn money of course doing work, so it will not be slavery
they will just be required to pay for their food.

Everyone is ignorant to certain things until it happens to them, or someone close to them.

On the contray, punishment is a very good deterent from crime

I disagree, i base that on what i've learned on my own and from a friend of mine who graduated with a degree in CJ and that's basically what he told me.

Punishment might deter crime but it's not a solution. The root of most crime, like eehee was saying, is caused by your socioeconomic status. "if we didn't have to compete for jobs, if everyone had their basic needs fulfilled, there would be almost no crime"

You'd still have some crime but that would come from angry relatives or corrupt bussiness owners (who currently get away with just about anything as it is). You wouldn't have 99% of the crime we have today.

Sorry, just not buying that at all. If the socioeconomic arguement were true, you would be able to tell just by looking at the nature of crimes committed. You don't really see people being arrested for stealing grains to feed their families. The crimes committed are obviously not for subsistence.

It's not because they're looking for basic sustenance. It's because they live in poor conditions and have little chance of moving up in life. There's a reason poor people are significantly more likely to end up in prison (by birth) then everyone else, and why being born poor is the number 1 indicator for latter success in life.

Btw this is basic sociology, I would recommend you take an introductory course; sociology is very interesting, if flawed in some ways.
