Punishment might deter crime but it's not a solution. The root of most crime, like eehee was saying, is caused by your socioeconomic status. "if we didn't have to compete for jobs, if everyone had their basic needs fulfilled, there would be almost no crime"
You'd still have some crime but that would come from angry relatives or corrupt bussiness owners (who currently get away with just about anything as it is). You wouldn't have 99% of the crime we have today.bb.com online city!

It's not because they're looking for basic sustenance. It's because they live in poor conditions and have little chance of moving up in life. There's a reason poor people are significantly more likely to end up in prison (by birth) then everyone else, and why being born poor is the number 1 indicator for latter success in life.
Btw this is basic sociology, I would recommend you take an introductory course; sociology is very interesting, if flawed in some ways.bb.com online city!

If that's true, how do you explain crime among the rich and famous? That's a whole different thread. Incidentally, for a convicted felon, isn't she special??
