    Rowing, good for building muscle?

I just joined the rowing team about 3 weeks ago and we practice about 2 hrs 6 days a week on rowing machines and on the water. Does anybody know if this will build muscle or what benefits come from this kind of exercise?
    I rep back!

That's more like cardio. Make sure to eat enough etc or you'll end up burning muscle.... Would be a great builder if you were only rowing for 6-12 reps with a couple hundred pounds lulz.

if you eat enough, its inevitable that you will gain some muscle from it, although not as quickly as weight training would, and you are neglecting a lot of muscles if rowing is the only thing you are doing.

i seen kid get crazy triceps from rowing..

i also knew a mid sized girl get a sweet ass body from joining the crew team.. they run track often and have a weight room just for the team and do a lot of swimming.. its pretty much cardio and endurance over weight training.... but they do a lot of it all..

I train in outrigging as well as bodybuilding. If you don't have much muscle you will gain some.

It will lean you out more.

    6 days 2 hours a day? That's a hell of a lot.

rowing is cardio, although it would help in building some muscle the same way cycling does, but only if you do it at a high resistance level.

Deadlifting works better. In fact, just about any form of weight induced muscle overload works better.

You'll gain muscle endurance for sure.

Muscle mass though ? Unless you are skinny right now I don't think so.

You'll lean out though which will make you look more muscular.

It's superb for building lean muscle mass, not so good for outright muscle mass (that requires additional weight training, but we always did that as part of our rowing training anyway).

Certainly one advantage of rowing over every other cardiovascular exercise is that it works out almost every muscle group on your body. Just add in some weight training to your rowing regime and you'll see good results.

be prepared to be rowing with some DOMS

i did rowing for a couple years back in highschool, i rowed twice a week and worked out 3 times a week and still gained mass so it's doable.

you will gain weight, its cardio sure, but its also sprinting. think of 100m runners, most collegiate rowers end up with bodies like that. Strong, lean, low BF %, and most are over 200 pounds

I walked on at a sprints league school with no prior experience. Before I started that september I was 6'2 180. By the time I went home for christmas break, ie 3 months, I was 205. Legs and upper back were a lot bigger. Arms not so much. All weight was muscle however. I ate a lot during that entire time, probably 5k calories easily. I also trained like an animal. By february I broke 20 mins in the 6k. That spring I had a 6:08 2k which is pretty unheard of for someone with no experience that isnt 220+ 6'5.
