I am heading to my derm on friday and considering getting roaccutane for acne on face, chest and shoulders.
I was wondering if anyone on here has taken it while lifting and playing sports like football or rugby?
Did you get any side effects like joint pain and muscle fatigue & Do the side effects have any effect on your performance?

I've never heard of those happening, but if you check something like eMims, like I did, you can get some info like such
"Uses/Indications: Retinoid. Severe cystic acne unresponsive to conventional therapy
Contraindications: Severe hepatic impairment; chronic elevated blood lipids; retinoid hypersensitivity, soya, peanut allergy; pre-existing hypervitaminosis A; vit A supplementation; tetracyclines; pregnancy (incl 1 mth prior to and after therapy), lactation
Precautions: Ensure adequate contraception; blood donation; wax epilation, aggressive chemical dermabrasion, cutaneous laser treatment (within 6 mths of treatment); personal, family history of lipid metabolism disorders, obesity, alcoholism, diabetes, smoking, depression; severe renal insufficiency; intense sunlight, UV rays; monitor LFTs esp ALT, lipids; children
Adverse Reactions: Pseudotumour cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension) (discontinue); ophthalmological effects; raised TGs, cholesterol, LFTs, uric acid; hepatitis; dry skin, lips; epistaxis; musculoskeletal symptoms, hyperostosis; hair loss; rash; depression, psychotic symptoms, suicidal ideation; acne exacerbation; pancreatitis; nausea, severe diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disorders; bronchospasm; blood dyscrasia; hypersensitivity; others, see full PI
Drug Interactions: See Contra; minocycline; topical keratolytic, exfoliative antiacne agents (incr local irritation); microdose progesterone, progestational androgen substance OCs (avoid)"
and in the "adverse effects" section
"Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders. Myalgia, arthralgia and increased serum creatine phosphokinase may occur and may be associated with reduced tolerance to vigorous exercise (see Adverse Reactions).
In clinical trials of disorders of keratinisation with a mean dose of 2.24 mg/kg/day, a high prevalence of skeletal hyperostosis was noted. Bone changes including premature epiphyseal closure and calcifications of tendons and ligaments have occurred after administration of high doses for long periods for treating disorders of keratinisation. The dose levels, duration of treatment and total cumulative dose in these patients generally far exceeded those recommended for the treatment of acne.
Minimal skeletal hyperostosis has also been observed by X-rays in prospective studies of nodular acne patients treated with a single course of therapy at recommended doses.
Due to the possible occurrence of these bone changes, a careful evaluation of the risk/benefit ratio should be carried out in every patient and Roaccutane administration should be restricted to severe cases."
So, you MIGHT have problems. Probably wont though. A mate of mine was on Roaccutane for a few months and it didnt do much bad except give us less to pick on him about.
Also, it can cause adverse psychological effects...such as depression and suicidal thoughts...so that might be something to mention to your derm.
Best of luck

He was taking two pills a day, without food...and I honestly dont know what strengths it comes in.
yeah, there is a higher chance of adverse effects with higher doses, THATS THE SAME FOR EVERY DRUG.(almost)
(sorry, just in case other people are reading, thats general advice for them)
hang on, you're a Queenslander yeah? you havent been signed up to play for the Gold Coast AFL team yet? I heard they had sign ups on the wall. haha.
Good luck anyway bro.

Took this stuff my sophomore year in high school. I played nothing but year your basketball. Lots of side effects for me.
1) Lots of joint pain. Back, knees, elbows. Just terrible pain all the time. Felt like a 80 year old man in the morning until I got adjusted to getting up and all.
During basketball it was bad. My back was always giving me problems. Not pain in the sense that I pulled a muscle but pain in the sense that when I would move from one position to another my body had to readjust and pain was felt until the adjustment was made.
2) This is the worst, depression. I became severely depressed off this stuff. I was on a 6 month cycle and I had to end it in just 4 months because of the depression. This is no joke also. Accutane has been linked to MANY teen suicides.

This is why its a last resort medication, because it CAN have severe side effects, and they arent sure who is likely to have side efffets and who arent.
For all you who have friends on it, Make sure you watch them closely, because of said problems.
You ended it in 4 months? fair enough, if the depressive symptoms were still there. if you're on medication that has depressive side effects like SSRI anti-depressants, you should stick with them for at least 4-6 weeks because they take that long to have an effect.
Roaccutane has a troubled history even within the pharmacuetical services...pharmacists dont like dispensing it but there's no better treatment available unfortunately.
while we're here you might as well ask away about any other drugs you might have an issue with (Im a pharmacy student...with access to expensive books/programs I could search for you guys)
