PWO drink immediately after hindering our gains?...
Was just reading Dave Barr's The Top 10 Post Workout Nutrition Myths, and found one to be very interesting. Here's a link for those of you that want to read all of them. http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=659666&cr=
5. Consuming the drink immediately following the workout will elicit the greatest protein synthesis.
It’s amazing to see how more advanced, and often experienced, people behave in the gym when it comes to getting their post workout meal. Some guys even sit there, right after their last set, and slug back a drink! In fact I’ve even heard "as soon as the weight hits the floor" touted as the war cry for the hardcore. While this is actually a sub-optimal practice for muscle growth and recovery, not to mention borderline obsessive compulsive, it’s good to see their heart is the right place.
Comparing research that used drinks consumed immediately after a workout (Tipton et al., 2001) versus those ingested an hour after training (Rasmussen et al., 2000), the results are surprising: it seems that post workout meal ingestion actually results in 30% lower protein synthesis rates than when we wait! So every time we thought that we were badass for drinking "as soon as the weight hit the floor, we were actually short changing ourselves. Not a big deal, that’s why we read T-Nation. Let’s just learn, adapt, and move on.
I'm sure, myself, like many others, slam down their PWO shake as soon as their done, so this really got me thinking.
Would love to hear some opinions on this. Thanks.

If you are into the science, the most recent research out of the ISSN says the opposite.
I don't need studies to tell me that post workout shakes taken right after training help, real world results prove that.

i wait until i get home which is about 15-20min later and by the time i'm consuming the shake it may be 30-45min post workout
to me this study doesn't matter because i'm hungry after a workout and if i'm hungry that means i need to eat
logically it doesn't make too much sense because your body has spent all of its nutrients and is thirsty for more so i dunno
this def won't make me change my routine but its interesting none the less

I see where you're coming from. Just always thought it was best to get the nutrients into you as soon as possible.

I have seen more gains (real muscle growth) in the three month since I started taking protein + carbs (Universal Torrent) immediately post workout then I did the six month prior. Under both cases I eat a balanced meal 1 1/2 hours after working out.

Even if it did not work it would be hard to stop taking Torrent. The taste is addicting

well said E.
I saw HUGE gains when taking a PWO shake (not necessarily IMMEDIATELY or "when the weights hit the floor"), but nonetheless...PWO..not waiting 1 hour or more...

word, at no point in my life can i/want to take in calories at a higher rate than right after a workout. i guess i mix up my torrent 5-10 minutes after my last set. I stretch and head back to the locker room, get my things together and hit the water fountain on the way out.

I've been reading a lot about this lately. So many interviews saying it's best to drink your shake 30 min after you lift.
These beliefs are always changing. Watch soon they're gonna say protein post workout is a bad idea.

I used to use take a food bag with whey in it to the gym and stick it with a fresh pint of milk in my locker so I could rush and mix it up after a workout..
Now I don't bother.. I drive home, take some vits, oils, some creatine, beta-alanine..
eat some fruit.. later have a shake. Probably about 45mins after a workout that I have a shake these days.
In my experience - it makes no difference to my growth at all. Then again lots of things that are accepted as fact in this industry I've come to personally find just aren't true. Like the protein per pound rule? And the amount of cals you need per day? Maybe I'm alien, but I've found I certainly don't need half of that to grow.
Test everything yourself - and it's best to accept nothing as fact, even the core basics. Just try it yourself and see if it works. Sure they're reconsidering how gravity might work so there's no shame in getting it wrong once in a while
