Regaining lost muscle / Muscle Memory?

I've read a few times about muscle Memory and that it can be slightly easier to regain muscle that has been lost due to time off from the gym, illness or whatever, Is this true? Anyone had any experience with this?

hahah this is actually a good way to describe it.

some might say your muscles actually have a 'memory' and seek to regain their former strength/size after shrinking.

I think you regain size/strength more quickly the 2nd 3rd etc time around because you know what it takes to get there, from diet to lifts to rest. The trial/error part is over, you know how to reachieve what you lost.

Yep. I hadn't seriously lifted in about 5 years. I'd go throw some weights around every once in a while, but nothing set. Started lifting 3 months ago and it's coming back fast. From struggling with 185lbs to benching 250x6 last week.

Ah, That's good to hear, Was Hospitalised earlier in the week and ive not eaten or kept anything down for over a week now, Not expecting to be able to for another few days and even then i wont be back to my previous diet or training for a couple of weeks. Not a vastly long time on the grand scale of things i know but my weight is dropping fast. Lost 3KG already

Been going through this the last few months. I went travelling for 7 months and basically lost all my strength. When I got back I benched 70kg for 8 reps and squatted 70kg for 10.. 7 months later and I'm benching 140kg for 5 or so, squatting 180kg for 5 or so and deadlifting around 270kg .. so yea, muscle memory is true.

I lost 15 pounds and my reps from 225 dropped from 10 to 2. I got it back in about a month. It does suck however to start over.

No such thing as memory in muscles but you can retain the increased motor unit recruitment for longer then you keep your size. Also, you get your weights up faster the 2nd time around because of the actual "memory" your CNS has of how to lift the weights (IE you technique is better then it was the last time you started out). Also, if you took time off from being sick and then started lifting only to find out you are back at the start, that probably has alot more to do with your body just being tired and short on energy stores. The strength can come back fast then because it neve really left, you just replenished your glycogen etc.
