why is this bad news? Should be good news? Unless someone provides sufficient evidence to show that a lack of auto bailout will more than likely lead to a depression, there is no reason for the bailout. And honestly I have a feeling it won't lead to a depression.

Did anyone actually ever claim that a failed U.S auto sector will plummet the economy into depression, other than the auto makers arguing for themselves?

first of all we already are in a depression, it isnt as much as a lack of bailout is killing the economy in the long run, but more about how the news of it is killing the economy now

they will go into a structured bankruptcy, not out of business. It's much better this way. Now we can finally get rid of that crappy management, those stupid unions and all that other dead weight.

are you sure it's a depression now, and not a recession? I'm talking about leading is into pre WW2 type depression. If that's not gonna happen, let em fail

yea, depression is when like 70% of the population is unemployed, obviously not the case now, just a bad recession.

As far as America being number 1, we haven't been for some time now. Military, perhaps. That's about all we have going for us. Big deal though.

I know i'm from canada, and to you americans, that makes me dumber, but im getting tired of ppl calling this a depression. It isnt yet. Go look at the numbers from the dirty 30's, unemployment rate, amount of failed banks, etc.

I honestly think american car manufacturers have dug themselves into this giant hole, and they should be the one to suffer because of it. I know thats harsh but it was dumb move after dumb move for these guys.

*facepalm* Great depression-a depression is a severe economic downturn that lasts several years. It has nothing to do with unemployment, and never in history there was a 70% unemployment and will never be

I never said they weren't hurting. And expect the market to drop -400+ points tomorrow.

There is no logical reason to bail out ANY of these companies, ESPECIALLY the automakers. 14 BILLION, whoopdie doo.

    8.4 TRILLION so far

The damage has already been done.

maybe this will be a wakeup call to the auto industry and they will stop hiring union workers to sweep the floor for $80k a year...

unions are killing the schools, they are killing the auto industy, they nearly killed the airlines until the unions accepted concessions that they did not want including paycuts and they are killing other areas like public transportation... every year the freaking MTA in ny city raises rates because its "losing money" yet every 3 years you hear them "reaching a new deal with the unions" to avoid a strike...

say goodbye to unions, not to america...

More doomsday talk. It'll never end.

If GM and Chrysler go under, the other companies will pick up the slack to try and obtain more share of the market. The only ones really losing out would be Detroit.
