definitely not. you really think the supplement companies would avoid doing something that would boost revenue?
imagine two supplement companies. one has zane as their poster boy, and another has say, phil heath. who do you think is going to sell more supplements?
yes, frank zane has more appeal to the general public, but also keep in mind the people who would even think about buying supplements, they are not the average crowd.War against epigenetics.

lol the supplement market is HUGE right now. It has nothing to do with IFBB physiques for the most part.
Theres a big difference between an average Joe training and taking supps for fitness and health, and someone doing it for competition.
Bbing always will be a niche sport, simply because normal people cant relate to it, be it Zane or Coleman at the top. They still cannot fathom how it is possible to achieve such development and conditioning.
It is not as obvious as something like football, anyone can pick up a ball and throw it around, now stepping onstage at even 7-8% bf... If most people dont even know how or cant lose 5 lbs to make that gut not show...
Another truth is that your average Joe who has no clue about bodybuilding wont be able to tell you a difference between Zane and Dexter Jackson. Both will appear like aliens to him, and when he sees it whats the first thing that comes into his head ? STEROIDS
Now consider the general attitude of non training public towards steroids nowadays, and realize that no matter what you do, bodybuilding will never be mainstream.
it will take a full legalization of hormones, + total rehash of public psychology + nutrition and training courses starting from middle school to get those people to understand bodybuilding.
Maybe after 20-30 years of those changes, you would have a chance of making this sport mainstream.
right now not a snowball's chance in hellLast edited by Vadim Beliaev; 12-12-2008 at 03:17 AM.

Because people want to see bodybuilders who have pushed their physique to the limits. Besides it is up to each individual what they do with their body. I know I would much rather see people like Ruhl, Heath, Jackson, Warren ect then Zane.

^^^^Agreed. A Zane style physique on a current Mr O would NOT make bodybuilding mainstream. Show his pic to the average member of the public and the majority will go 'uggghhh thats too much/too veiny' etc.
People pay to see freaks. Zane was freaky in his day (in terms of being ripped etc) but now folk want physiques bigger.
I've said it before but go to any show and guess who gets the biggest reception? The big boys, which says it all what bodybuilding fans wanna see.''There’s this battle over waterboarding at places like Guantanamo Bay. I think that they should just say, “Hey, if you guys don’t talk, you have to see Hercules In New York.” I guarantee those guys would talk much faster. You don’t need to do waterboarding or anything else. That’s the ultimate threat.''

I think bodybuilding fans are a very small sector. Supplement companies seem to be the only sponsors because of the freaky image other sponsors are afraid of that image and being attach to it.
Am not saying go back to the size of Frank Zane am suggesting if the judges made the number 1 criteria SHAPE and PROPORTION . So if a bodybuilder develops size but sacrifices any proportion of size then they lose points. Am not saying size should not be part of it, but it should only be rewarded if it comes with perfect shape and proportion. I do not think Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni would not paint the modern guys as the perfect human shape( and I painter can use as much paint as they want)
Then mainstream will excepted it , as something to admire and want, sponsors outside supplement companies would pump money in. Mainstream TV and media would start broadcasting and there could be more pro bodybuilders, plus they could involve themselves in more TV work, modeling , art expeditions ect. The pro bodybuilders will also be healthy and have a more able lifestyle.

Muscle development yes, Physique NO!
This is my point guys seem to recognize 2 things Size and cut (bf)
They do not see all the other intricate details involved in a perfect physique
This proves to me bodybuilding has been simplified to 2 key factors. Bring back the other factors it well take a greater level of control, discipline , limitations, intellect and close observations.
Instead of it being based on excess , eat as much as you can, lift as much as you can , use as much drugs as you body can take.............Where is the control , limitations and discipline in that?

Zane is an inspiration.... for his time he had an amazing build. He wouldnt stack up the the size monsters of today, but he was in such good shape for his time.
It's really to bad that people dont respect guys of this size as much anymore because of the huge era that we are in now.DFAC/ANBF Natural Pro Bodybuilder

Bodybuilding is what it is.All sports and competitions have gone through something called evolution.People want to see bigger, stronger, faster competitors it's a fact.As Vadim said most of the population cannot relate or comprehend what bodybuilding today is.So we can forget about it going mainstream anytime soon, accept it for what it is .Love it or hate it, Pro bodybuilding is for the elite and not for faint of heart,if you haven't figured out what you must put your body through in order to be on top and stay on top, then i suggest you find another hobby or lifestyle.

Zane was a true great. He took a different approach to bodybuilding to his contemporaries and he knew exactly how to present his physique posing wise.
Another truth is that your average Joe who has no clue about bodybuilding wont be able to tell you a difference between Zane and Dexter Jackson. No crew crew.

Bodybuilding fans want freaks and the general public doesn't care.
