im no dietition by any means, but perhaps for a young age something like the anabolic diet would be better. you cut carbs completely for 2 weeks and then after that weekdays consist of high fat, high protein, low carb. weekends consist of high carb, moderate fat, low protein. it works best if you workout. i just think itd be better than no carbs at all, you dont want to stunt your growth or anything. then again tho, im not professional.

I would say yes figuring most 13yrolds have **** diets consisting of soda, sugar and Mcdonalds...... How could healthy fats possibly be bad compared to the **** teens normally eat and are still alive?
If you're going to do it, just make sure to take some vitamins/supplements and watch things like calcium. You need calcim at that age and it's somewhat harder to get on a keto diet since you're not drinking milk. You can get it from cheese and eggs instead.

Beef, fish, pork, chicken, broccolli, lettuce, spinach, various greens, nuts... oh that makes for a terrible diet and is very unsafe...

a 13 y/o on keto just doesn't ring right to me. In terms of physical health, it's fine. But psychologically? I would say it could lead on/result to a lot of potential, subtle problems.. am I the only one feeling that?

you could always just go for it for awhile and eat lots of redmeats and cheeses and such and then get a cholesteral test and if your doctor says its too high then youll cut back on the fats. its not like youll die before knowing u have a problem hope this helps

It's better than doing the starvation diets they do.
The thing that doesn't "ring right" to me is ..... look at her pic and stats.
Stats: 5'2", 115 lbs.
That is NOT fat.
Leah, why do you really want to do keto? What's wrong with you?
If your problem is "flab" and "fat" which most teens think they have.. you probably just have flab and no muscle tone and need exercise. Not a keto diet. Too much dieting can turn you into a "skinny fat" person..which is when the numbers on the scale are lower but you're still finding fat to pinch on your underarms, hips and thighs and everyone tells you that you're "not fat".

You know, keto is great to maintain on if you up the calories too. It isn't all about crash dieting. It can just be a nice way to stay trim.
Her profile says she has a Gold's Gym membership. Not only that, but it says she loves the way working out makes her feel.
On top of that, how many guys here diet down obsessively just to see their six packs? And they're doing it not much older than her.
If anything, keto would be a safer, healthier diet to be on. I started it when I was 15, and nothing bad happened to me. I'm tall, I get As, etc... not stunted in any way.
MissLeah, just make sure to eat whole foods, not processed, and to get enough vegetables in. Low carb/keto is a pretty natural way of eating.

Then go for it. Just watch the nutrients/minerals. Maybe use a website like fitday.com to watch your nutrient intake. And good luck.

Not saying something bad would definitely happen. But a lot of times you see the teens with eating disorders come in forums like this because they're pinching fat off their wrists and want to do a crash diet. So that's why I was asking why she wanted to do it.
I don't see how keto could stunt someone's growth. Their are teens who go vegan/vegetarian and aren't short.

Someone posted studies that prove that it does to an extent, but the study was done without carb ups which may change things.

Generally, the younger you are, the more carbs you can eat, even on a low carb diet. You could easily do a keto diet with lots of vegetables, including root veg and some fruit.

I'm sorry, but you are a child and you are still growing. And at 115lbs, you are in no need for any sort of diet so please just eat normally and enjoy a good life.
If you have an eating disorder, I suggest you seek some counselling.

for a competition keto may not be the best diet to follow for prep. it is forgiving and is muscle sparing but you may need higher carbs to keep muscle fullness. alot of contest prep diets are maybe 30/60/10 or around there depending on the individual. i think you should look into other diets aswell and develop your own plan

i went vegan for 2 years and it f*cked up my metabolism not to mention ate an insane amount of muscle. i was the epitome of skinny fat. i'm still trying to get my metabolism on track and i'm only 23 - still young as hell!
i would NEVER recommend a vegan diet to someone looking to get truely lean. different story if you have ethical objections.

It absolutely is safe for you. I know kids at the age of 7 who are on a ketogenic diet because it helps with epileptics. It is, believe it or not, the treatment of choice and if it doesn't help get rid of the seizures THEN they try drug treatments but believe you me if a parent can see a child seizure free on the diet then they usually go that route! So dont worry at all...BUT make sure you know what you are doing first!

Vegan is probably like any other diet that works for some people and not others. Just like some people do good on carbs and some do not.
Most vegans I've seen have that anorexic look. Guys who are like 5'7 and weigh 125lbs.

I made the exact same mistake.....tried a vegan diet and saw the weight dropping off and thought'wow'....kept at it for a few years and then the weight just started piling on!
Even tho i started eating healthily, it took 18 months before i started to lose the extra 2 stone because of my loss of muscle...never again!!!

I like the keto forum because of how its members demand some level of scientific support. So many other subforums on here just have members bickering at each other where no side shows any proof and then gets defensive when someone asks for an objective view.
-----------------------------------------------------------
A source for those who want a quick glance at one study:
"Height-for-age z scores significantly decreased from -0.30 to -0.99 among subjects on the diet for 12 months. Subjects with high ketones experienced a significant decrease in height-for-age z scores from -0.45 to -1.1, whereas subjects with moderate ketosis did not. Observed percent seizure reduction was similar to those of other published studies, with subjects with high ketosis being more likely to have better seizure control on the ketogenic diet at both 6 months and 12 months; this difference was not significant."
the above is from http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m..._/ai_n14710371
------------------------------------------------------------------
Another study on 237 children found:
"There was a small decrease in height z scores in the first 6 months (<0.5); however, there were larger changes by 2 years. There was no difference based on sex for either height or weight. The ketogenic diet generally provides sufficient nutrition to maintain growth within normal parameters over a defined period. Very young children grow poorly on the diet and should be followed-up carefully over long periods of use."
the above is from:
