they would never get to the point of hand to hand combat.
why would marines give them the chance?

*Of course* the Roman's would win. Anyone who says otherwise is f***ing retarded.
Marines *with guns* would beat the Roman's - but without guns....
A 'knife' doesn't stack up against a sword and a shield and ALL the Roman's trained for was old school hand-to-hand combat. That's what they do. Modern military techniques are all about ranged combat and what not. That's why they all get guns.
Romans would p0wn the f*** out of the Marines.

I should neg the OP for the STUPIDITY of this post. yes lets take the common infantryman used to training with an M-16, SAW, 203 etc., and put him against the Roman Legion WITHOUT that weapon. Why do you think Marines get ****ed up if they leave their weapon lying somewhere? Because they don't fight without them.

Dude you're a fukcing idiot. Just over time alone men have gotten bigger, stronger, smarter. So it wouldn't be a damn fight at all. A bunch of 5'3 dudes vs. Trained marines in martial arts. LMFAO
The average height of roman legionnaires is 5'4.. midgets against grown men. This fight is stupid and the people backing the romans are douche bag history buffs who play World at War: Roman Empire.
People who say they were taller are probably just lying because they get a hard on with the past.
I'm sorry, but Marines would smack the **** out of them.Last edited by rkellyspee; 12-10-2008 at 03:18 PM.

If the romans had swords and shields they would easily beat the marines armed only with combat knives. In true hand to hand combat the marines would beat the hell outta the romans.

You contradicted yourself there. Saying the Romans were 5'3 then saying 5'4... Anyways if you read through the previous pages archaeologists were not surprised to find Roman bones and skeletons from that time in history that were 5'8, 5'9, etc.
Also the Roman's were also trained in a very effective form of martial art. Very similar to Pankration (ancient mma basically). And I think the Roman legionaire would not hesitate to bite out the throat of a marine if they were wrestling on the ground. They fought like animals.** Game of Thrones crew **

I said they were 5'3, then googled and found out the average height of the legionnairres was 5'4... 4 inches taller than the average man at the time of 5'.
There were bones and **** found from a lot of different groups of people back in the day suggesting people grew 5'8 - 6'2.. that doesn't mean the whole army and/or population was that height... because they weren't

Regardless a 5'8 Legionaire up against a 6'1 Marine would not make much of a difference. The Romans often used to fight Germanic Barbarians who towered over the Romans (like 6'3) and the Romans destroyed them in CQC.
Take a look at this excerpt taken from a book. Now surely if there were Cavalry available at this height then the Legionaires would be too.

why does everyone think marines are so great
i mean i think highly of them and all other military people but i mean there just normal dudes who decided to do that
mostly as a last resort (though sometimes not)
and lastly most marines i have met or seen are kids who got there ass kicked in highschool and made fun of so they joined the marines so they would be tough and people wouldnt mess with them
im sure not all are like this but still
and to take away from the seriousness of my post

You're 17
Im telling you, NO we dont train hand to hand more then rifle.... why would we??? how would that make sense?
If I had a K-bar, flak, and kevlar and the Roman had a dagger, and sheild and whatever armor he was wearing, i would probably lose. I don't train in knife fighting. I would probably resort to Muay Thai, because i know that. and I would probably get stabbed.
however, if this was just a battle, not all of us in a field and someone yells go, we may have a chance due to covert operations. we could sneak in at night (something I believe the romans thought taboo) and slit the throats of a large number of them, while we would have constant "fire watch" and would not be ambushed at night.
still eventually we would meet face to face, and get slaughteredDisregard everything, acquire profitz!
America is not at war. The Marines are at war. America is at the mall.

All your average heights are out by about 4 inches.
Also Roman vs. barbarian combat was definitely not as one-sided as you think. The Romans defeated barbarians through discipline and tactics, I think individual barbarians were superior in cqc and the romans recruited them whenever they could.
"The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest took place in A.D. 9 when an alliance of Germanic tribes led by Arminius, the son of Segimer of the Cherusci, ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions led by Publius Quinctilius Varus.
The battle began a seven-year war which established the Rhine as the boundary of the Roman Empire for the next four hundred years, until the decline of the Roman influence in the West. The Roman Empire made no further concerted attempts to conquer Germania beyond the Rhine."
