Getting wisdom teeth out! Food i can eat so i don't starve???!
I have to get my wisdom teeth out next week, and i'm upset because i can't eat for 10 hours before surgery....then for around 3 days "so i've heard" i'll be struggling to recover and not really be able to eat solid food
Does anyone have ideas of what i can eat to keep up my nutrition and not eat the same thing everyday? soup..yogurt...blahh....
Preferbly something vegetarian or vegan....but i'll do what i have to so my body doesnt eat itself.....

You may be able to eat solid food quicker than what you are being told, When I had my wisdom teeth out I was okay to eat whole food the next day it just depends on how you handle pain.

Throw anything you want in a blender and drink it You'll be loopy on Lortab so you won't care how it looks or tastes.
Milk, ice cream, cottage cheese, juice, juiced vegetables. Just use some creativity.

You can blend just about anything and drink it (not sure about taste though)
You can mix protein powder into things like pudding or apple sauce.
Bananas and PB don't require chewing.
Ice cream won't hurt in moderation to get the calories up.

This may sound gross . . . but I lived on it after wisdom teeth came out. Canned corned beef hash (lower fat/lower sodium version). Admittedly, it's not a very "clean" option, but it kept me going until I could eat something better.
You don't really have to chew it at all--just kind of mash it up against the roof of your mouth. Cleans out easy with the syringe you will get to wash out food for the first week or so.

One thing . . . do NOT drink anything you blend through a straw!!!!
The suction can pull the clots out of the tooth holes and that is misery that you don't want to deal with. A friend of mine ignored his dentist's warning's on that and wound up with "dry sockets".

I second not using a straw. I lived on Gatorade and pudding for about a day, then I could ear almost normally.
And be strong and tell the doc you don't want the vicoden. I took 3x ibuprofin 3x a day
Another idea I don't think I read yet is oatmeal.
Good luck. It's not as bad as you think.

you can eat mashe potatoes, anything soft really. i remember when i got mine out, i didnt really eat much the 1st 2 days or so than the 3rd day iw as at the movies and there was a china buffet next door and i was starving. needless to say i had like 4 plates of food but i ripped out my stiches so there were gapping holes in my mouth. you need to worry about leaving food in there and getting it infected etc. luckily i didnt have any problems and everythign healed fine. just make sure to always rinse with water or salt water and to use that syringe they give u to put water in to clean out the holes youll have for a week or 2. its not as bad as oyu think.

It really depends on how the surgery goes. I had mine removed and was at cedar point the next day and eating normal food. Otherwise, you may be stuck with blender food or stuff you can swallow easily. Tuna might work...

i had jaw surgery a couple years ago & i would take chicken or steak, potatoes, peas or some type of veggie, blended it & it was pretty good actually (if warm/heated up).
i had to do it after eating ensure shakes for weeks....i cringe at the thought of one of those shakes.

Don't worry about getting in a certain amount of protein or fat or anything for a few days, just eat what you can.
Mac N Cheese, milkshakes, oatmeal, bananas, soup, protein shakes, yogurt, you might even be able to manage a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

They will give you a list of recommendations, follow them exactly. I had a SIMPLE extraction (no surgery) , and I took 3 days to start eating "relatively" normally.
The instructions I can remember are
- no straws (very important to prevent dry socket which will be extremely painful)
- no hot liquids (warm is ok, not hot, so if you have soup, let it cool a bit, and no hot hot teas, for example)
- nothing with sharp edges that can get trapped in your tooth sockets (eg. chips, crackers)
I found chicken breast easy to eat actually, but things like broccoli were impossible (big chunks and lots of chewing = bad).
If you are worried about being hungry, get some of that ultra peptide 2 that was linked above, mix with milk. It will fill you up, and you will be a lot less hungry.

i just got local anesthesia, so no trouble about eating before hand, and i lived off of scrambled eggs since i could just swallow them without chewing... on the 5th day they gave me the syringe to wash out the sockets, and i started eating normally...

Lucky. It took me 1 week and a half to get back to eating solids. I also clench my teeth when I sleep, so that didn't help either.

Baby food and ice cream!
Back when I had mine taken out, I found a vegan version of a Slimfast type drink at Whole Foods. High protein, low calorie, etc, so my mom bought a few cans. Unfortunately we didn't check the expiration dates, and the first one I drank was expired by almost a full year, no joke. It made me horribly ill - and you can imagine, throwing up right after having your wisdom teeth out is a terrible and disgusting experience. So just be careful! That goes for any time though..I just don't get a lot of opportunities to share that story
Also, I didn't care at all about getting enough protein/calories/anything. Too nauseous and tired to care. I hardly ate anything as a result.
