Do you have any sort of lift? Tires?
They are more important then adding bumpers/bumper protectors if you are to do any off roading.
If its mainly for show, I would go with one of these:

Its on a Tundra, but you get the idea.

Thats my old truck, it seen more off roading then my new one.

If you are doing just like, 80% road, 20% off road, then I would suggest Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTX tires, I got them on my new truck, love them, great all around, could be a little more aggressive, but they hook up good in wet, snow, mud and dirt.
What year of Tacoma?

My old yellow ranger i posted had a 3inch lift (body)
Just be careful, you get alot of body roll, and the truck handles ALOT different.
I would suggest this, as the perfect off road/on road driving package.
3 inch lift
Add-a-leaf rear suspension
Leveling kit in the front
Rear end will ride a little rougher, but if you put a trailer, or anything in the back you will barely squat the truck.
Plus, your 3 inch lift, with the leveling kit, leaf kit, and if you put on bigger tires again, will get you about 4.25 - 4.5 inchs of lift total.
are you doing the work yourself?

Putting a lift in is not exactly easy, but nothing too difficult.
Box is easiest, pull your liner out, unbolt it, get 2 buddies to lift it in the air, and slide the blocks in your mounting location, line it up, install new bolts, box done, newer vehicle - 45 min approx.
Cab is hard, you have to unbolt the cab, when i did my ranger i had to pull the front fenders off and then re install them and align them.
newer vehicle - 2 hours approx.
The bumper relocation brackets, e-brake cable bracket are all easy to install.

I installed the 3 inch lift in that Chevrolet in a weekend, but that included painting the frame with the rubberized asphalt paint.

Ya, there are a few kickin around, but its more tuner cars,
I love gettin up beside the Honda civics with the fart can and the cold air intake thats just "balls to the walls fast" and destroying them with my badass 4x4 truck.
The Diesels are kickin off here pretty big, I love seein the big old stacks just pourin out the black smoke.

No, I aint,
Proof:
Jeeps from the factory - 4 cylinder, or 6 cylinder
Unless your boltin in a V8 (ie, 350 chev and the turbo 350 trans will bolt into it with little modifyin) you aint goin to make enough horsepower to turn those 35s
Whos the idiot now?
(Yes, I have played with 4x4 trucks once or twice in my life...*rolls eyes*)
