Retarded Sleep
Im pissed of this morning. every night for the past few weeks I havent been able to sleep more than four or five hours. I wake up feeling fresh, and sometimes force myself to sleep another hour but usually i cant even get back to sleep and have to get up. wtf is up with that? Im even off caffeine and it doesnt make a difference, its like my brain only needs 5 hours sleep but i know i need more.
I was thinking of taking ZMA since it promotes good sleep. anything else that could help this?

just cause you only sleep 4 hours doesnt mean you didnt get a good nights sleep.
it may just mean that you had a great long and undisturbed REM cycle

I made a thread like this a while back and everyone said you got enough sleep if you wake up feeling refreshed. Some people need different amounts of sleep so it depends on the person.
Just cause it's kind of on topic; A few days ago I heard about a study that showed people who only get 5-6 hours of sleep a night tend to live a few years longer than people who get 8 or more.

Valerian worked at first for me, but then it started making my heart race. I'd avoid that stuff if I were you.
The best I've found is plain melatonin. You can buy it cheap just about anywhere.

For me, I could go to sleep at 3 am, and still wake up at 7 or 8, and I won't feel that tired. I'm a really light sleeper too. It pisses me off. This morning I woke up at 6:15 (don't even have school today) because I heard some noise outside my house. I tried hard to fall back to sleep, but once I'm up, that's impossible for me.

Not that I'm aware of, but I find a larger dose of it will leave me lethargic through the entire day sometimes.

I've been taking ZMA for a few months now, and althought I couldn't compare it to melatonin or anything like that, I know it always gives me a great nights sleep. If I can give myself 7+ hours to sleep, I always wake up feeling amazing.

No side effects. Just take it about 45 min. before you plan to hit the sack.
And yeah -- higher doses can leave you drowsy into the next day, so just stick with the 1mg pills. That's all you need.

It's only possible to have a 3 hour REM if total sleep is 4 hours
so I doubt that and btw I have a phD in broscience
to OP i think people just need different amounts of sleep
you could try melatonin its OTC.
are you really stressed?
edit melatonin already suggested, nvm

For me, it doesn't matter how much sleep I get. If I get 5, I wake up and feel like ****. If I get 10, I wake up and feel like ****. But, I average between 5-6 hours nearly every night.
I personally think your bed if a huge determining factor of quality of sleep. Im not advocationing those special bed things you see on tv, that's crap. But, my bed sucks and I always wake up tired. My gf's bed kicks butt, and I get much better sleep.
Also, I saw a study once that said the only thing you should do in your bedroom is sleep and have sex. This "programs" the brain into going straight to sleep when you go to bed. I believe this 100% becuase at my house I am in my room 90% of the time when I'm home. I'm on the computer, watching tv, attempting homework, whatever, all in my room. So, it's more difficult to sleep. On the otherhand, at my gf's, all I ever do in her room is sleep and have sex, and likewise, I sleep great there....

1 mg to 5 mg of melatonin is considered to be safe and sufficient. It is recommended to start taking melatonin supplements at low dosage from 0.3 mg then gradually increase your dosage up to 5mg until you find the effective dose.

Damn, how do you accomplish anything during the day. I hate going to bed becuase I want to stay up and keep doing stuff. Most of the time I wish a day was like 30hours...

well, considering that your body goes through sleep cycles, he would only be going through 2.5 cycles on 4 hours of sleep...meaning that he only gets about 45 minutes of REM sleep, which is not sufficient.
