The vast majority of businesses that employ people at minimum wage can afford to pay them far more, and depressed wages cost taxpayers more money in the long run (welfare, food stamps, etc). Any initial "shock" to employment resulting from a higher minimum wage is offset by the increased demand for goods and services that accompanies it. Basic economics.
Also, re: your sig, Costco pays people upwards of $15/hr starting.

I want a place to get a cheap meal on the go. I do not give a phuck about if they pump money back in the community. I shop at Wal-Mart because I can get a case of diet soda for $5. The service of the business providing items for cheap is giving back. Now that minimum wage is rising, business owners will be less inclined to open business here in the state.

The first half of your post is factually and demonstrably false and shows very little understanding of economic theory.
The second half of your post is an opinion and can't really be proven one way or the other.
In addition, that number I posted includes the "underemployed," which is people who have skills and qualifications far beyond their actual employment. An extreme example would be a cashier at McDonald's with an Astrophysics degree.
Besides that, have you seen what job postings are like recently? It's a wonder anyone can find a job.

And this increase in base pay will not only effect end suppliers and retailers but also producers, shippers, manufactuers etc and this increased cost from all levels will be reflected in prices. No matter what you buy be it gas, a candy bar, protein, chicken, a car, a computer, whatever more than likely has multiple minimum wage workers involved. This costs gets passed on to the customer. Who in turn will request more more pay to make up for increased prices. After all why should their buying power be decreased because some unskilled person thinks they "deserve" more? Increased costs (wages) = increased prices.
What about the person who put in a few years at their company to make a few bucks more than minimum wage? Do they just take it up the A and let their buying power decrease or demand an increase in proportion to the pay raise? Again increased costs = increased prices.
Unless you want to live in fairytale socialists lib land.Last edited by KawRider; 09-12-2013 at 07:26 PM.

Yep. And the depressed wages paid by Wal-Mart cost us all more in taxes because their workers don't have healthcare (brb paying for uninsured ER visits) or enough to eat (brb paying for someone else's food stamps) or enough to pay their rent (brb paying for welfare).
A living wage is better for everyone as increased wages increase demand for goods and services, which is what drives job creation.

Raise minimum wage and prices for everything will rise to compensate for it.
If you made minimum wage $40/hr, if businesses don't outright leave (most likely) then the prices of everything would go through the roof.
Look at the prices of food in boom towns where everybody is making ash loads of money. Everything is so expensive.
